WE SHOULD BUY THE SHARES
My question is essentially that we are paying the union a couple a quid a week, and we know how much they have given to the Labour Party.
My proposal is that we set up a trust that buys the Royal Mail shares, 100,000 Postmen/women paying £2 a week = £200,000 now just imagine we could slowly buy up a large stake.
I don't want to go into too much details other than to say we have to put our money were our mouths are.
What do you think?

Re: WE SHOULD BUY THE SHARES
What I am trying to point out here is that the greater stake you have in any company the greater your influence is.
(1)We can vote people onto the board.
(2)We can influence if dividends are paid to shareholders or not.
(3)We can boycott competitors mail.
(4)We can influence the pension situation.
(5)We can protect the Royal Mail.
Don't let our company sink without a fight, I love the company, and I want to fight for it, please don't let this great company down.

not just the CWU alone but maybe a few of those at the TUC aswell might add up, plus the pension trust fund managers could add to the pot.silly suffolk wrote:I like your passion. but will we have the financial clout to take on some bastard hedge fund.

Re: WE SHOULD BUY THE SHARES
I personally want to keep our terms and conditions and build upon them, the share price/divvy's may come from the expansion abroad like deutsche post's/DHL share price has done after privatisation then globalisation and succeeded. the pay rise might come from this globalized RM and the massive rise in online parcel deliveries. but also I hope the CWU will be expanding into the likes of my Hermes and TNT and DHL, those companies are crying out for a real union to represent them with real contracts and real employment laws. the whole shebang needs to expand. the EU said so by opening up competition in the first place. I just hope it now goes global and successful and not a race to the bottom but the CWU needs to grow with this growth so we get good T&Cs whoever we work for no matter now who own this or the next company, our T&Cs need to be industry wide.fishtank wrote:Wouldn't that be a conflict of interest?

I thought TNT already had union representation?sb9726 wrote:I personally want to keep our terms and conditions and build upon them, the share price/divvy's may come from the expansion abroad like deutsche post's/DHL share price has done after privatisation then globalisation and succeeded. the pay rise might come from this globalized RM and the massive rise in online parcel deliveries. but also I hope the CWU will be expanding into the likes of my Hermes and TNT and DHL, those companies are crying out for a real union to represent them with real contracts and real employment laws. the whole shebang needs to expand. the EU said so by opening up competition in the first place. Re: WE SHOULD BUY THE SHARES
2 pounds each worker is not enough it need to be something like 20 pounds each so that will be about 2.5 millions pounds worth and we will get our money back from rising shares price.

Re: WE SHOULD BUY THE SHARES
Owning 40% (50% if you include free shares) would cost every member about 30000. I don't think many people have more than a years wages hanging around.
Besides we would then argue amongst ourselves and want slow people fired cause it costs us more money.

Re: WE SHOULD BUY THE SHARES
Well we should all agree to let the cwu represent our 10% share for starters and find the best possible ways to gain on that percentage, the problem I see is after 3 years some will want to cash in decreasing the joint percentage down so we must act fast, can it be done? I for one would like to see the percentage of my cwu fee put towards this idea or something similar rather than the poxy Labour party before I withdraw that part of my subs.

Re: WE SHOULD BUY THE SHARES
Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote and post a reply.
We want to fight back and keep the Royal Mail as a national institution, once other shareholders get wind that there is a concerted effort by the staff to regain control and direction of the company and that all dividends in future will be re-invested, I think they will be frightened off.
I have taken great interest in the follow up to privatisation, My idea is borne out from frustration that we as Postmen/women have been unable to come together and put up a resistance.
Everyday when I walk into my office, the first thing I am faced with as enter the premises is a plaque "Lest we forget the men who gave their lives for their country". It then list names of Postmen from our office who died serving their country during World War II.
I walk past and think how they would have wanted us to react to the sale of the great Royal Mail. I think they would have put up a fight. So should we.

Re: WE SHOULD BUY THE SHARES
Would make a nice headline "Royal Mail workers start campaign to own their company and protect the 6 day delivery"
