A postman in The Hague managed to steal €200,000 from the tax office by filling in his own bank account number on forms people had been sent to apply for tax rebates.

He is due to appear in court on October 24.

The tax office says it has increased security measures to stop similar abuse, RTL news reported.

On one hand theft is bad and should be punished but there are many very rich people/businesses that are screwing the taxman out of much much more and we allow that to happen.

It is 'bad' but I'm sure he was 'of previous good character'.

Do you think that is pre-printed on defence paperwork?

In the forces when you got you Long Service and Good Conduct Aware (the equivalent of previous good character) they always said it was for 21 Years of Undetected crime, I guess its the same.

However, a wee bit of an insight, everyone gets a chance to explain why they shouldn't be sent to prison, or why the full force of the punishment due under the law shouldn't be applied. The judge/magistrates have to take that plea of mitigation into account, so the best way to read a mitigation is not by what it says, but what is doesn't. If the plea just says he is a good son and/or husband or the suggestion of previous good character, well its not a very good mitigation which probably means the Brief for the accused can't find anything else good to say about them, and probably means the sentence won't be mitigated that much.
