Privatisation is right wing ideology at its worse

THE privatisation of Royal Mail by this ideologically driven, small-state, low income tax, deficit-cutting, welfare-hating, food bank-creating, bedroom tax, right-wing Tory Government is a mistake.

Tory voters everywhere will rue the day they voted for David Cameron in 2010 because privatisation means cuts in services, and deteriorating working conditions for staff, and further increases in postage stamps.

It goes without saying that our Royal Mail public service is as important a British asset as our National Health Service.

Once any form of privatisation occurs, the profit motive is assured.

Nationalisation of this public service is what I personally believe in because nationalisation creates jobs and keep workers and their conditions at work secure.

Whereas privatisation is all about deteriorating working conditions for the staff and, consequently, no security for the postmen and woman who deliver the public's mail through their letter box six days a week.

In other parts of the world the general public do not have the personal service Britain's Royal Mail service has always provided — direct to the door through the letter box.

This one thing makes Britain's Royal mail service unique.

The Tories would have us believe that privatisation in general saves tax payers money.

It does not, this is a myth perpetuated by right wing Tory and New Labour governments since the 1980s.

Privatisation needs to be upheld by tax payers' money.

Privatisation is about cost effectiveness on the shop floor, this is micro economics.

Privatisation is right wing Tory ideology at its worse.

A brief example would be former Tory leader John Major's privatisation of our railways in 1992.

According to Labour's Carolyn Flint on a not so recent Question Time, privatisation of our railways cost British tax payers £400billion a year to uphold whereas another panellist stated that nationalisation, prior to the 1980s, cost £100billion.

So it would be cheaper to nationalise the railways other than to privatise.

I used to be a postman at Guildford sorting office for 13 years, so I have seen working conditions change first hand.

In 1974, I joined the amalgamated Post Office, and Royal Mail when it was a nationalised public service funded by tax payers for the use of tax payers.
The Tories have wanted to privatise the Royal Mail/Post Office for decades.

When Margaret Thatcher's right wing Tory government came into power in 1979, one of the initial cut backs on the periphery of privatisation was that the postman and woman's Christmas casual help was taken away, and mechanisation was introduced to replace hand sorting by postal staff, and all in the name of so-called cost-cutting efficiency, micro economics.

Casuals at Christmas helped the regular postmen and woman with the heavy posting, and casuals were needed, when casuals were taken away the postman and woman had to stay behind and sort the mail, and the second delivery was cancelled.

And this practise of cancelling the second delivery continued throughout the year, and all under, in my opinion, the unsuspecting eyes of the general British public except, of course, postmen and woman's families.

So cost-cutting efficiency on the shop floor is what privatisation is all about — supposedly getting the best for the tax payer, while shareholders read their profits on the backs of workers.

The Tories have but one economy policy, that of mass unemployment as in the 1980s. Cheap labour and service industries with little protection for workers.
And privatisation, with inward competition making for more and more insecurity for workers, is part parcel of the right wing agenda that has been running this country since the 1980s, including under New Labour care of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, who both kept to the Tory agenda of privatisation, other than bringing all our vital services back under public ownership, to be used by the tax-paying public, for the benefit of the tax-paying public, and funded by the tax-paying public.

Since this privatisation of Royal Mail was announced, according to the news, privatisation shares have been selling in droves, a maximum of £750 for each purchaser, it is clear that some people have no principles whatsoever, anything for the fast buck, as in the 1980s when Margaret Thatcher privatised our natural utilities, pushing utilities charges way over and above inflation.

Clearly these shareholders don't care about the poorest people struggling to pay these bills, particularly the poorest pensioners whose state pension has increases linked to inflation, and not male average earnings as the state pension should be linked.

Since the 1980s this just about sums up the main reason for the deterioration of my country, the fast buck, while the poorest people have gone to the wall.
