The Communication Workers Union is holding a protest outside the London Stock Exchange on Paternoster Square tomorrow morning (Friday) to coincide with the floatation of Royal Mail.
Demonstrators dressed as robbers with swag bags and as David Cameron, George Osborne and Vince Cable - along with postal workers with a huge banner saying 'the Great Royal Mail Robbery' and placards - will protest from 7am to 9am. CWU fears the taxpayer will be sold short with the float and believes there is no need to privatise the successful company.
Billy Hayes, CWU general secretary, said: "There is still no reason to privatise this great British company which is successful in public ownership.
"The public were already opposed to this sale as consumers - now everyone's realising it's a terrible idea for the public as taxpayers too."
The price and size of the Royal Mail privatisation will be announced at 7am and the company will officially float on the stock market at 8am.
96% of postal workers voted against privatisation in June this year in a consultative ballot on a 74% turnout.
A YouGov/Sunday Times poll in September found that 70% of the public are opposed to privatisation of Royal Mail.
CWU is holding a strike ballot on the issues of pay, job security and terms and conditions which are made more urgent by the privatisation of the company. The ballot closes on 16 October with the result the same day.
