Sorry if this has been posted before.
The Tories aim to succeed in privatising Royal Mail where Labour failed. To do that they have had to reverse New Labour’s policy of using regulation to batter Royal Mail, in order to restore it to profitability. The crisis in Royal Mail has always been to a large degree artificial, manufactured by the government to restructure the company for the needs of big business, and prepare it for a selll-off.

Agree with all of that except the idea in para.4 that the solution to falling mail volumes would be to enable everyone to work less for the same money.

the reality is quite the opposite, their system works very well . that's why there is more millionaires and billionaires than there has ever been . the fact that they can keep the illusion going and deceive so many people is amazing. the idea that the wealth is created at the top and trickles down to the rest of us is engrained into us from an early age . unfortunately too many people lead such a docile life. hats off to them , if you can mess up the economy to such an extent and get everyone else to pay for it ......Shambles wrote:We whom work for RM know they have more twists and turns than 'Spaggetti Junction' and their strategies are Legendary!

It's not that controversial an idea to reduce the working week with no loss of pay.Brain Fury wrote:Agree with all of that except the idea in para.4 that the solution to falling mail volumes would be to enable everyone to work less for the same money.
We've done it a couple of times in the last 15 years.
What has never been properly resolved in deliveries is the ability to maintain full-time employment with reducing indoor workload due to both reducing volumes and automation.
Royal Mail's response has been to move the workload outdoor but that is not a long term solution, anybody who has worked on a 4hr-4.30hr delivery for any length of time will tell you that physically it is very demanding and probably around the limit of what is comfortable.
These new delivery methods are still subject to a Long Term Fatigue Study but I would doubt if there is more room for maneuver outdoors.
The alternative will be more part-time working but the business has committed to a 75/25 split which is higher than present.
Another decrease in the working week might be a solution for all concerned.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

I don't know the detail but I suspect that the previous reductions in the working week were part of a package that still reduced the overall wage cost. I certainly don't think RM will ever think the best solution to falling volumes (and thus potentially falling revenue) is to maintain existing wage costs.fishtank wrote:It's not that controversial an idea to reduce the working week with no loss of pay.Brain Fury wrote:Agree with all of that except the idea in para.4 that the solution to falling mail volumes would be to enable everyone to work less for the same money.

You haven't taken into account the CULL on useless Managers, which will not only get rid of the DEAD Wood, but also free up Capital that used to be paid to the 'Incompetant' fewBrain Fury wrote:I don't know the detail but I suspect that the previous reductions in the working week were part of a package that still reduced the overall wage cost.
