Members of the National Union of Postal and Telecommunications Employees (NUPTE) Wednesday protested the non-payment of special allowances including earned allowances, transfer allowances, repatriation allowances and burail expenses.
The union also issued a three-day ultimatum to the management of NIPOST to resolve the issues or face an indefinite strike.
The workers, who commenced their protests in the early hours of yesterday in Area 11, Abuja shut down the premises of the national headquarters of NIPOST and comprised mostly of junior level workers.
They protesting workers bore placards with various inscriptions: “Level 6 receiving N23,000 only, how do we cope, “monkey dey work, baboon dey chop, “non-payment of rent enhancement, non-remittance of tax deductions to FIRS” among others.
The National President of NUPTE, Mr. Sunday Alhassan, who addressed the workers, said the allowances were being owed since 2011.
He added that the workers were unhappy with the cases of selective promotion going on in the organisation without commensurate increment in salaries.
Alhassan added that a letter detailing their grievances has already been written to the Ministry of Labour and Productivity and other relevant authorities, but no action was taken to avert the protest.
“These are NIPOST workers protesting over organisation’s inability to pay them their earned allowances, these allowances also cover transfer allowance, burial expenses and repatriation allowance which has not been paid for more than two years now. We have cases of workers here being promoted without financial connection for over two years, we have discriminatory payment of what they call rent enhancement to some categories of workers while some are not earning it and we have complained to the management over the years and they have refused to listen. That is why the workers are protesting,” he told journalists.
But in a swift react, the General Manager, Corporate Communications of NIPOST, Mr. Taiye Olaniyi, refuted the claims by the union that the management was not interested in resolving their issues, stating that a meeting was scheduled to discuss the issues, but could not hold because of the Independence Day holiday.
He said: “Efforts are on to consolidate on the agreement reached with management, particularly on the grey areas. We resolved through our consolidation effort and they agreed that we will meet on Tuesday but unfortunately the holiday hindered that effort, later we started hearing calls from many places that our post offices were being locked by staff of the same organisation."
