Cos at the moment, it is still a service & regulated as a service - get that business model to fail ( by allowing competition to undercut the price to business, force the service to complete the competition's work at a loss, destroy the backbone of the workforce by forcing out the experience, and vastly increasing the labour turnover overnight - maybe not, I only guessing ), have the owner of that service wash it's hands of it, and present it onto the open market - no longer as a service, but as a full fledged business with shareholders to appease with dividends every year.

Personally, the class of service between Royal Mail and DHL is different, just because RM is cheaper doesn't mean RM is better in terms of service, for some people, economical-ness of RM is good but some customers actually want their mail to arrive on time...

You ought to have a word with Crozier and Leighton then instead of on here, they want us to go out later starting next week. Some things are out of the hands of your local posties and we are trying to make a stand against someone who wants RM to be a profit based business not a Public Service orientated business.

It's been done in other post state run industries -1 Lower the expectations of already disappointed customers so they meekly accept things 2 Rising Prices , sky high profits & poor service won't excite anger, because they know protest is futile 3 The RM spin machine will try and give the impression of forward planning , lots of waffle from Ivory Towers.148 Old St about "improvements" on the Horizon but noone will expect anything to materialise , if anything they'll expect nasty surprises . Cynicism & Defeatisim makes that Stalinist STYLE Prime Minister's job a lot easier. :lfo is a salesman , it's all about selling something you haven't got, and Supermarkets make money and keep overheads down by any means possible.

I guess it does depend on what the public like myself want, either:

1) A Business-based Service or
2) A Public-Service

Now with the option 1, you have to make Royal Mail a PLC, evidently even though the HM Government took partial control in 2000, it's still not making much in terms of quality, fairness of employees etc, I think everyone can say, the management sucks ass, LOL. With the option 2, there won't be shareholders and treating its employees bad in terms of trying to gain proft because the goal for option 2 isn't to make profit, it's to make a public service run as smoothly as possible. If Royal mail did become a division of the Government, where there won't be a PLC, the responsiblity lies with the Government entirely and I don't think the Gov would screw Royal Mail as much as they're doing right now. Just because some other mailing companies are either limited or plcs doesn't mean Royal Mail could survive as one.

And your opinion is correct. There has been a determination to sell off Royal Mail and these last few years have been solely to create an atmosphere that the public will accept. It isn't the ordinary workers that have failed to provide a service but the managements brief to destroy the public confidence in it. Many of us with a number of years service have felt that the system has been continually stretched and starved of investment. Our service was opened to competition years before it was necessary and this management was determined to become the poor cousin. The public should be made aware of what is in store for them and before it is too late.

The rhetorical question that screams out from the above sentence is Would those other mailing companies ( as private business concerns ) be able fulfil the Universal Service Obligation ( the ability to deliver to every household in the UK & collect from every postbox every working day ) in the same manner as Royal Mail has for years?
