Dog bite

Hi all. Joined up today for some advice. My names stephen and i work in my local delivery office in northern Ireland. Basically today i was doing an estate in my rural run and a dog bite me. The dogs never out but today for some reason it was and as soon as i got up to put the post into the letter box it bite me on my leg. The owners weren't about to tell them about it and when i said to the boss he said i was stupid to get out, but sure i didn't see it till late. Just want to ask for some advice on what to do?? am sure there have been way worse

Northern Ireland changed the law in 2011 with the Dogs (Amendment) Act (Northern Ireland) 2011 which received Royal Assent in March 2011 and was fully enacted by April 2012.

Here, the new law - which was introduced by Northern Ireland's Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Michelle Gildernew - amends the 1983 Dogs (Northern Ireland) Order. As in Scotland, much of the reform deals with the wider problems caused by dangerous dogs in the community, but it addresses the specific issue of attacks that take place on private property by explicitly exempting the owner from prosecution only in cases of criminal trespass.

Northern Ireland still has a requirement for dog owners to have a licence for their dogs. In addition the Dogs (Amendment) Act (Northern Ireland) 2011 introduced provisions which makes microchipping of most dogs compulsory, gives powers for dog wardens to attach control conditions to a dog licence for problem dogs and makes it an offence to have a dog that attacks and injures another person’s pet animal.

Get your rep to contact the branch legal and Medical Secretary. He will send you an LS3 claim form as long as you are in the union. The union solicitors will then take it on.

You must talk to your manager and ask for it to be put into the ERICA accident reporting system. If they decline trying to fob you off, update your thread

I can't claim to have any medical qualifications but that doesn't look too bad to me and it should heal within a week, and a couple of pints might help if it's keeping you awake at night.

Believe me, that sort of "Minor" dog bite is worth £500 to the member. It is also business for Simpson and Millar. People do not expect to go into work to be injured.

Bot of an update. Manager and union man are away to scotland at the minute for talks so temp manager is dealing with it. Sending a letter out to owner at the minute. Asked him about that accident report thing and said he didnt want to go down that route yet? Also ringing the cwu helpline later and see about claiming

Bro with regards to the accident reporting thing to which you refer and to your temp manager saying he didn't want to go down that route yet. It's really not his decision.

1. The accident book or equivalent must be readily accessible. (In your case the equivalent would be the online ERICA reporting system).
2. It is a matter for the employee, not the employer or any one acting on behalf of the employer, whether an entry is made in the accident book or equivalent.
3. There is no restriction on the nature and type of accident and injury that can be entered into an accident book or equivalent. It is for the employee to determine whether or not they have sustained a personal injury and whether they have been involved in accident.
4. There is no restriction on the time within which an accident has to have occurred in order for an employee to make a record in the accident book
or equivalent. Regulation 25(3)(b) implicitly recognises that an entry may be made in an accident book at some point after the accident occurred.


Royal Mail have further been advised that a failure to provide a proper, accessible, accident book or equivalent may amount to a breach of statutory duty pursuant to Regulation 5 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
