A postal firm today delivered jobs joy to the region by announcing the creation of 1,200 roles.
TNT Post has picked Greater Manchester as the first place outside of London to launch its new delivery service.
It will process post at 11 new offices opening across the region and deliver parcels and letters to all homes and businesses with an ‘M’ postcode.
Jobs on offer will range from ‘posties’, who will get about on TNT-branded bikes, to back office sorting staff.
TNT says the nature of the roles makes them ideal for jobseekers, including women returning to work, second jobbers, those balancing childcare commitments and school or college leavers.
Delivery units are set to open in Manchester, Salford, Trafford and Bury when the service goes live in November.
TNT handles both addressed and unaddressed mail from businesses like BT and Sky, as well as public sector bodies, but not from general members of the public.
Its new Greater Manchester operation will run alongside Royal Mail but will see every single item scanned as part of a track and trace service.
TNT chief executive Nick Wells said: “We are passionate about creating new job opportunities for the people of Greater Manchester and delighted to make this announcement.
“The postal industry is undergoing great change and I am proud that TNT Post is able to create new jobs for people who need them and also to provide career opportunities for those who want to progress in a growing company.”
TNT already has a large distribution centre in Warrington and will use it to sort mail for the new service. Previously, it sorted parcels and letters and then supplied them to Royal Mail for general delivery.
It has been trialling its stand alone service since April 2012 in London and has picked the 'M' postcode as the first in a national roll-out.
Inward investment body MIDAS, which acts on behalf of Greater Manchester’s 10 local authorities, has been working with the company over the past year to lure them to Greater Manchester and help find the locations for their 11 offices.
Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester council, said: “This scale of investment and job creation in and around Manchester is always welcome and it’s pleasing that TNT Post has decided to launch a major Greater Manchester operation.”
"We're under model" - oh no we're not - stick your lapse elsewhere ...
Was on TV today that 1000 new jobs will be created in Manchester from November. Showed a clip on line of several orange bikes going out with two panniers and a bag on the front. Odd that TNT choose to use bikes when we have just binned ours - who knows rather than us delivering their mail it could be them delivering ours. Wonder how they'll go on maintaining them or even if they'll bother.
I see they are cherry picking certain areas again , complete joke , r/m should tell em to f**k off and get them to deliver all there s**t , oh but we will keep delivering it until they have picked all the areas for them to take , how can this be right.
However I would be interested to see on here an 'on the ground' assessment of their actual impact so far on our operations in West London and Scotland? How has it affected the work of DO' s in the areas of concern?
My thought was ... if they're creating 1,200 jobs in Manc with TNT ... and they're going to be delivering all their DSA ... how many RM jobs will be lost ?

And Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester council doesn't have the sense to realise that any job creation in and around Manchester by TNT is most likely to see an equivalent job reduction in and around Manchester by Royal Mail and that Manchester's economy will suffer from a thousand TNT 'posties' on the minimum wage spending less and claiming more benefits than a thousand of us. and we can't be sure if Sir Richard (a) hasn't noticed that "TNT already has a large distribution centre in Warrington and will use it to sort mail for the new service" or (b) doesn't realise that Warrington is NOT in Manchester.
I saw a TNT guy delivering to my bank (in NW London) yesterday at 17.30. He was in a van marked TNT Same Day Delivery.
Why aren't Royal Mail doing a same day delivery service?
