Bosses make last-ditch offer to staff over retirement deal in bid to save £3bn privatisation

ROYAL MAIL has caved in to pressure from staff and offered them a new pension deal to save its £3bn privatisation.

Employees, represented by the Communication Workers Union (CWU), oppose the sell-off and are threatening to strike over pay, conditions and pensions.

On Friday, Royal Mail scrapped a proposal to cap pensionable pay rises at the rate of inflation, up to a maximum of 5%. The new offer will allow increases for a majority of CWU-represented grades to accrue towards the final salary scheme.

The move represents an about-face by the postal service, which had said its pension changes were vital to the commercial viability of the privatised business.

You're right fish, IF this did happen five days ago my inbox would be full of CWU memo's telling me of the climbdown from Royal Mail, and how they had succumbed to the Union pressure.
My letter box would also be rammed again with bollocks from the Company extolling the virtues of an improved offer.

Pensions

The purpose of this LTB is to advise Branches on pension developments in both Royal Mail and Post Office Ltd.

In the last few days the companies have sent out communications to employees confirming the detail of their final pension change proposals, which were due to be placed before the Trustee Board today.

It is important to note that although the employees of both companies are all part of the same scheme, albeit in different sections, the final proposals from the two companies have ended up being completely different and impact on our members in very different ways.

In Royal Mail, concessions were made to the Union around restoration of the final salary link for movement within CWU represented grades and negotiations are ongoing about legally enforceable guarantees over the future. However, we have told Royal Mail that negotiations must cover all aspects of their proposal, and that any decision to implement any change prior to reaching a final agreement will be viewed as Executive Action. Furthermore, it would destroy the claim by the Chief Executive that they want to work with the CWU. We have communicated our position in writing to both Royal Mail and the Trustee Board. Please advise our members that the Union remains in dispute with Royal Mail on pensions.

In Post Office Ltd, the company made no concessions on their original proposal, did not offer any guarantees over the future and have failed to engage the Union in discussions on this important matter.
It is our view that Post Office Ltd have acted in a duplicitous and shambolic manner throughout the pension consultation and thereafter.

We have written to Post Office Ltd in the strongest terms possible and have instructed our Lawyers to write to the Pension Regulator calling for an enquiry into the position POL have adopted. We have also written in similar terms to the Trustee Board.

Once we have received responses a further update will be given to Branches.
