he Labour party has plans to put a stop to the government's privatisation of the Royal Mail, it was revealed Tuesday.
The party, which has stated it is "fundamentally against" the move, is planning to force a new Commons vote on the matter in a last minute bid to prevent the sale from going ahead.
Ministers earlier this month released a statement confirming the Royal Mail’s intention to float in the near future, meaning any vote would need to take place within the next few weeks.
Labour, which has warned it believes the privatisation would causes services to suffer and potentially bring about post office closures, said at its Brighton conference: "We think we can have one last vote when we get back from the recess. Let's push for a vote in Parliament and stop the privatisation before it starts, for the benefit of the postal service and its workers."
The comments will be welcome news for the Communication Workers Union (CWU), which has threatened strike action if the move goes ahead.
CWU Deputy Leader, Dave Ward, said the union and Labour would stand "shoulder to shoulder" on the matter.
He also called on the party to make a strong commitment to the organisation, saying: "This is a crunch moment, and the party cannot say it is opposed to privatisation and not follow it up with a commitment to renationalise."
At the beginning of this month the CWU warned a protest would be 'inevitable' if a deal couldn't be agreed with workers.
The union is disputing the settlement of its 2013 pay claim, further changes to the workers' pension scheme, the impact of possible privatisation on job security, as well as the company's future strategy.
The organisation said 125,000 of its members would be balloted for a national postal strike, the first time since 2009.
