Parliament is full of full time politicans, with the exception on Mr Johnson (ex CWU), who have never had a proper job in their life.
Yes, Billy could do with brushing up on presentation a bit, but so could I.
I have been on the radio before and found it very daunting.
So would you rather have a posh leader, who sounds great and has never been on a postal round or seen the inside of a sorting office?
In my eyes he did not do himself any favours . This was a chance to let people no what were fighting for. He only had a couple of minutes air time and started rambling about plastic bags. When asked about the shares , I thought the least he could have done was explain the deal and let the public know! we don't get any money for three years !.Aswel as when the 3 years arrive there's no Guarantee how much money we get. As for people saying hes not the best public speaker ! He's the leader of the union he should be , I am sure i am not the only one, who has even more doubts about the unions ability to win this fight. When you see this kind of performance from the leader.
Didn't sound convincing and failed to put forward the CWUs case in a clear logical manner, next time it should be Dave Ward. It was a prime time slot which could have created a a lot of good publicity if handled correctly.
I don't know about anybody else but I like my union leader to be forceful and to the point but articulate and knowledgeable about what he's talking about, to put our views on the subject and make people sit up and think about what is going to happen to this business if we are privatised, unfortunately Billy does not do this he continually flaps and stutters at the subject, I sit watching him always thinking " why isn't he asking about this or why is he not telling him this or for gods sake get some fight in you about the subject".
He is probably a really nice guy but he's not a union leader and a voice for our thoughts.
He is a Tub-thumper of an orator and is good in front of crowds although he does still trip over his words, is almost as though he thinks of something while saying something entirely different.
Dave Ward is more polished, but comes across (to me) as less passionate, he is good in interview situations but if he has a drawback its only that he is sometimes seen as stereotypical Union leader.
Linda Roy, who I have never seen speak on TV, but have on a demo, is I think a good mixture of both and perhaps she should be pushed more to the front. Perhaps even a possible leader at some point. (steps back to await comments).

Don't care what "class" he is! Don't care if he comes from Liverpool, Lands end or Lerwick. Don't care if he's posh or hasn't even seen a letter before. Do care that he's unable to get our message across in a creditable and coherent manner, especially when handed a prime spot on weekend tv to do so.

To me it's about substance, fed up with the politics of looking good and nice sound bites. Had plenty of that over the years. Tony Blair, the darling of the press, looked good didn't he? Could debate easily and sound great? But what kind of Labour government did you get? I am far from a Billy lover , but he is a politcal animal , he helped defeat the sell of Royal Mail 3 times twice under the Labour Party and once under the Tories don't under estimate him he might not be. Great public speaker but he is committed and influential in the political party.

I don't think anybody is questioning his political credentials or his commitment but in this day and age unfortunately you have to be a polished media "performer" as well.
It's something the whole Trade Union movement has been slow to realise.
It's very shallow and rather pathetic but it is the world we have to fight our battles in now.
I know it's a sad world where someone is judge on the fact of an interview rather thn the defeat of privitsatied on 3 occasions. Perhaps people respected Blair , Keggie and Johnson who were great speakers but either had no bottle or were worguns !!!
Who gives a monkey what he sounds or looks like as long as he does the business that's the main thing,when we were on strike in 71 Tom Jackson could speak well but did,nt have the savvy to defeat the government.
