Rounding up more news headlines from the global postal sector, including a new minimum wage at TNT Post Germany, a contract win for Polish Post and PostNL supporting recycling.

TNT Post Germany agrees minimum wage

Private sector postal company TNT Post Germany has agreed a new minimum wage level with the Christian Union of Postal and Telecommunication Services (CGPT).

From 1st January, the company will offer a starting wage of EUR 8.50 an hour in both western and eastern Germany. The deal covers sorting and delivery staff in the subsidiaries TNT Post Regioservice, TNT Post Regioservice Rhein-Ruhr and TNT Post Sortier und Logistik, as well as the company’s direct mail business, PostCon.

The agreement corresponds to a wage increase of between 6.3% and 11.8%, the company said. TNT Post Germany employs about 2,800 workers, of whom about 2,400, or 85%, are engaged in sorting and delivery activities.

PostNL provides letterbox locations for recycling trial


Dutch postal service PostNL is taking part in a recycling trial in the city of Leeuwarden.

The local municipality is setting up drop boxes for people to hand in unwanted small electrical items for recycling, with the boxes set up underneath PostNL letter boxes. The aim is to make it convenient for people to recycle old or broken appliances like mobile phones, hairdryers, mp3 players and electrical toys.

PostNL said 35m kilograms of unwanted electrical appliances and light bulbs are thrown away in the Netherlands each year. the Leeuwarden trial aims to halve the amount that goes into the general waste stream.

Itella completes sale of logistics software unit

Itella has confirmed that the management buyout of its Logia Software unit has been completed.

The Finnish postal service signed a letter of intent last month to sell the logistics software subsidiary to managing director Markku Kokko and business manager Seppo Marjamäki.

The move was part of Itella’s strategy to outsource its information technology operations under an agreement with IBM, with Itella intending to remain a customer of newly-independent Logia Software.

Polish Post wins social security benefits contract

Polish Post has won a four-year contract with the government’s Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) to distribute social security benefits.

The state-owned postal service in Poland said its bid met all the legal conditions to provide the service, delivering social security benefits in the form of postal money orders, including pensions.

Polish Post is the only company on the market today that is able to accomplish such a complex job that requires extensive logistics support,” said Łukasz Gołębiowski, the Polish Post sales director.
