I would think they are going to rush it through before the union has time to act and then the union will have diminished power and the company will be able to do whatever they want and staff will suddenly be fighting for their jobs as cheap zero hours contracts are brought in to compete with the ever growing and competitive private postal companies.
I would recommend a film called 'The navigators' by Ken Loach which you can get on love film or Amazon. Its about a group of workers after the BR privatization in the 90's. They suddenly have a new boss who comes down and tell management that there are no longer any agreements and all staff are offered VR and then go straight out and join the agency that supplies workers to the same job! One scene I do remember and it keeps coming back to me as a look around at all the blokes at my office that have been there for years and don't know anything else. The boss gives them a WTL session and tells them that the days of 'jobs for life' are over.
Its the final nail in a coffin that has been going on since the early 80's. Some people would say RM is a dinosaur, a relic of a lost time when working class people had decent wages and security and the time in which to do a job well and take pride in it.
I think RM is a treasured institution and the light is about to go out and thousands of postmen and women will go the same way as the Miners, steel workers and manufacturers of the past that now work at Tesco or a call centre for MW and no respect or security. That is if they have a job at all.
I hear they are going after firemen next.
