Placard-bearing TTPost workers took to the pavement yesterday outside their Piarco head office to protest against a number of complaints, including claims of the non-payment of backpay and the infringement of workers’ rights. One placard stated, “Management attempting to contract permanent positions that was approved by Government.” Another read: “Frustration, frustration, frustration with terms and conditions.”
Yesterday, Andre James, general manager, sales and marketing at TTPost, in a statement said unionised workers and representatives of the T&T Postal Workers’ Union (TTPWU) proceeded on industrial action in demonstration of the non-payment of backpay for the period January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2010.
“In April 2013, the management of TTPost and representatives of the TTPWU achieved the historical signing of the first collective agreement between TTPost and the recognised majority union at the National Mail Centre in Piarco. “Management has supplied all requested information for the payment of these funds to the relevant parties and are currently awaiting the disbursement of funds.
“As a result of industrial actions by unionised workers today, normal business operations have been affected. TTPost apologises to its valued clientele for any inconvenience caused by these actions,” read the statement.
