Barbados - Uncertainty for dozens of postal employees

Yesterday was the last day on the job for more than 20 temporary postal workers of the Barbados Postal Service and some flocked to a meeting with the NUPW on Thursday evening.

“They just didn’t renew our contracts. Right now the service [is] understaffed; I was working two routes coming in for somebody and some people working three so now to send we home mean that they will have a lot of problems,” said one temporary worker who was employed for two years.

Meanwhile, General Secretary of the NUPW, Dennis Clarke, stated that the union was aware of the situation and was working with the postal workers to address the issues being faced.

“We have spoken to the postal workers and we need to get the numbers (of layoffs) and we will look at that also. They are supposed to get back to us because they too are very concerned with what is happening to them because they have a fairly large number of temporary postal workers. Then you have auxiliary postmen who have not been paid for more than three months so there is a lot of work to be done in this particular situation,” he said.

The meeting with the temporary public servants attracted over 300 persons as there was standing room only in the auditorium at Solidarity House.

However, Clarke stated that a definitive response of action could not be given without the requisite information about the number of temporary workers and the amount of years of service which is being acquired.
