Postal workers are to take their campaign against the Government’s controversial plans to privatise the Royal Mail into the “backyard” of the Business Secretary.

Postal workers are to take their campaign against the Government’s controversial plans to privatise the Royal Mail into the “backyard” of the Business Secretary.

Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) will deliver postcards and a petition to the constituency office of Vince Cable in Twickenham, west London, on Saturday.

A campaign bus will also be driven around the area and a street stall will be set up.

Jim Kirwan, the CWU’s London regional secretary, said: “Vince Cable is holding the strings of this unpopular privatisation attempt so we’re taking the campaign right into his backyard. He shouldn’t ignore the feelings of his own constituents and the postal workers who deliver to his home and office.

“There’s no basis for privatising Royal Mail. It made £403 million profit last year and is successfully modernising under public ownership.

“Privatisation would be a major blow to the whole industry - putting jobs at risk, increasing prices and putting services at risk too. It’s not in the best interests of customers or staff.”

CWU members and Royal Mail managers belonging to the Unite union have voted against the planned sell-off. The CWU is threatening to hold a strike ballot unless an agreement can be reached.
