Deliveries to four Meltham homes are still suspended two-and-a-half weeks after a postman was savaged by a dog.

Royal Mail resumed deliveries to 101 out of 105 Meltham homes after carrying out a risk assessment.

The company suspended deliveries to the addresses after postman Jason Lee suffered horrific injuries when he was attacked by a dog as he approached a house on Copley Avenue, on July 9.

Mr Lee, 41, lost a large chunk of flesh and muscle from his forearm and required plastic surgery after putting his arm up to defend himself from the dog.

The animal has since been seized – but Royal Mail yesterday said it believed its staff were still at risk when delivering to four Meltham addresses.

It is believed the dog has been returned to the address where Mr Lee was attacked.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Following a risk assessment, Royal Mail resumed deliveries to 101 out of 105 addresses in Meltham.

“We regret that four addresses remain affected and their deliveries will be resumed as soon as Royal Mail is satisfied that our people will not be at risk.”

Residents of the four addresses have been told to collect their post from the Holmfirth delivery office.

Meanwhile, a Honley couple have blasted Royal Mail for threatening to permanently suspend deliveries to their and neighbours’ addresses following an incident with a postman and their dog.

It is not believed the Royal Mail worker was hurt by Cherry the Labrador when attempting to deliver post to Geoff and Kay France, of Station Street, earlier this month.

A letter from Royal Mail’s Holmfirth delivery office claims Cherry was ‘menacing’ towards the postman.

Mr France, who has since fitted a new letterbox to prevent contact with the dog, said: “We’ve had Cherry for years and she’s never bitten anyone.

“I accept that her bark might be scary but I object to them saying they’re going to suspend my neighbours’ post; that’s just over the top.”

A spokesperson for Royal Mail said: “Another customer in Honley was contacted following concern about the behaviour of their dog but this has now been resolved following a postbox being fitted which safeguarded the postman.”

The spokesperson added: “Since April 2011, there have been over 5,500 attacks on Royal Mail postmen and women, some leading to a permanent disabling injury.

“Attacks have resulted in the loss of 4,100 working days due to injuries.

“In our recent Dog Awareness Week campaign, Royal Mail with the support of a wide range of organisations and animal charities, sought to raise awareness of this problem and to appeal to dog owners to work with us to help keep animals under control when the postman calls”.

I tell customers if the dog is not doing what you tell it how do you know it will not bite me. have had two delivery suspensions recently on my walk. when it happens even after letters the dog owners seem to think their dogs are saints. In Scotland the law now states even if a dog is menacing it is an offence even on private property. it does not need to bite. it is no defence here that it occurred in a garden area.
