SERVICES could be cut and jobs could be lost in Ceredigion if government plans to sell off Royal Mail go ahead, the Wales regional secretary of the Communication Workers’ Union has warned.
Gary Watkins told the Cambrian News that the six-day-a week service in rural Wales would come under direct threat from privatisation, and cutting just one delivery a week would mean one in six of mid Wales posties losing their jobs.
The warning comes after the UK government said this week that it intends to dispose of a majority stake in Royal Mail by floating it on the London Stock Exchange by the Autumn. While 150,000 employees of Royal Mail will get 10 per cent of all the shares in the company, un-ions remain worried that it could spell the end of the universal, six-day-a-week service. Workers in Aberystwyth voted 10 to one against the privatisation in a recent union ballot.
“The universal, six day-a-week service in rural areas is extremely expensive and is subsidised by profitable areas such as cities,” Mr Watkins said. “We believe the introduction of private capital will squeeze services in rural Wales.
“The loss of just one delivery a week will see one in six postal workers lose their jobs.” Mr Watkins did not rule out strike action by Aberystwyth workers and said that the union would meet at the end of July to discuss action if a legally binding agreement on staff terms and conditions to be implemented on potential owners could not be reached.
Business Secretary Vince Cable maintained that the “key objective” of the reforms is “to protect the one price goes anywhere, six days a week service that businesses and communities throughout the country rely upon”.
“To do that,” he argued, “Royal Mail needs future access to private sector capital because the postal market is changing.”
Regional AMs have also said the sell-off could be “disastrous” for rural mid Wales, and AM Joyce Watson said the proposed sell-off threatens the survival of village post offices.
“It is the same old Tory story,” Mrs Watson said, “break it up, sell it off, massive job cuts, worse services, a quick buck, and long-term price rises.

If we are really worried about our job, best alternative option would be to buy Royal Mail by the employee. It is offered at a very cheap price. This is a chance to grab the opportunity to be the owner of Royal mail. Each of us need to find 23k to 25k in order to be owner. Well if we do it collectively, government can arrange a loan scheme with reasonable interest rate that we can repay over number of years. Our job provide us livelihood, bread and butter, 25k is nothing which can provide the security of our job and peace of mind.
