Politicians argue over private postal service

WITH the future of the Royal Mail as a state-owned body in doubt, west of Scotland MSP Stewart Maxwell has spoken out against privatisation.

Commenting on the Westminster coalition’s plans, SNP man Maxwell told The Extra: “Seventy-seven per cent of Scots are totally opposed to privatisation of the Royal Mail.

“A privatised mail service will put pressure on government to reduce the Universal Service Obligation jeopardising deliveries to remote and rural areas of Scotland.

“The biggest threat of all to the postal service in Scotland is the privatisation of the Royal Mail by a UK government that the people of Scotland overwhelmingly reject.”

East Ren Labour MP Jim Murphy declined to comment on the move.

However, west of Scotland Conservative MSP Jackson Carlaw welcomes it.

He said: “For years, Royal Mail has been stifled by government bureaucracy that has hindered growth and squandered opportunity.

“This is a welcome move to give Royal Mail the commerical freedom to do what’s best for employees and customers alike.

“Business managers, not politicians, know how to drive a business and make it 
grow.”

Jim Murphy obviously keeping his thoughts to himself, presumably to avoid upsetting any of his potential voters.

MSP Stewart Maxwell's opinion/stance is in agreement with the union and most posties by the look of it, at least that's what he is saying. Then, if he has a rural based seat, it would be his constituents that would end up suffering from a privatised RM, so he wouldn't have much option but to have that opinion. But, it is support for us.

Opportunities have been squandered because of the stupidity of senior management, or due to their indecision and the fact they take forever to do anything. That's what hindered growth, in conjunction with bureaucracy from the EU via the Government.
Had the playing field been level, and if it was level now, RM's finances COULD have been considerably better. Not that they would have been, under this and previous management.

Would like to see more and more of these types of stories and debates, helps get the message out to more people. Though it seems to be drip-drip at the moment. More definitive, more often and stronger actions required I think.
