CWU ballot warning as ministers prepare Royal Mail privatisation announcement

The CWU has warned that any announcement of Coalition government plans to privatise Royal Mail “will be met with a ballot for industrial action”.

It comes amid reports that the Business Secretary Vince Cable is poised to set out terms of a £2.5bn Stock Market floatation of Royal Mail before MPs leave the House of Commons for the summer recess on 18 July.

The union – which has more than 110,000 members at Royal Mail – says the sale of Royal Mail would both end the universal provision of postal services and damage working conditions for staff.

CWU members are touring London this week as part of a campaign targeting banks and institutions in the City of London linked to possible privatisation.

Royal Mail, whose history dates back to the reign of Henry VIII, as well as Coalition ministers, argue access to external capital is vital to the firm if it is to continue shifting its business towards a future focused more on parcels.

Speaking to UnionNews during the City bus tour, CWU rep and postwoman Katie Dunning said: “Royal Mail made profits of £403m this year, last year they made £157m.

“There is an alternative: we can borrow private investment and pay that back from the profits that we’re making year on year.”

It is reported that as part of the government legislation, Royal Mail staff would have at least a 10% stake in the group.

However, last month more than 96% of 112000 postal workers voted against sell-off despite each being promised £1500 of shares.

CWU general secretary Billy Hayes told UnionNews: “It looks like private investors are starting to get really, really worried about the fact that postal workers can see what privatisation means for their terms and conditions.

“And that’s going to be met by a national ballot for action.

“So we are saying to people who think they can make a quick buck out of Royal Mail – Royal Mail is not for sale.”
