Downpatrick - No mail after dog bites postman

Royal Mail has refused to deliver post to residents in a Co Down housing estate, after a postman was bitten by a dog.

The postman was attacked by a dog, thought to be an Alsatian, as he distributed mail to homes in the Kennedy Square area of Downpatrick on Friday, 21 June. He suffered bruising to his arm.

A spokesman from Royal Mail said they take employee health and safety very seriously.

"We are seeking assurances from the dog owner that the dog in question will be kept secured and not roaming the neighbourhood while we undertake deliveries," a statement read.

During a meeting with the Housing Executive, the council's dog warden, and Royal Mail on Wednesday, Sinn Féin councillor Éamonn Mac Con Midhe said residents are worried for their own safety.

He explained: "Other people have made complaints about the dog. An elderly woman was tripped up by the dog but she chose not to pursue her complaint.

"Some people are concerned the dog is a threat. Somebody's getting bitten and the dog's running about the estate and it's not under control. That's why we're trying to get it removed."

Up to 60 homes are thought to be affected by the temporary suspension of deliveries. Those living in the area have to collect their mail from Downpatrick Delivery Office.

"We apologise to all affected customers and would like to assure them that we are working with the owner and the dog warden to resolve the situation as quickly as possible," Royal Mail added.

Cllr Mac Con Midhe added that while postmen want to see the dog withdrawn from the estate, locals are left inconvenienced by the lack of mail.

"People are not getting their bills on time, different things that they're waiting on, cheques," he said, commenting that residents are keen to see the issue resolved.
