Signing in and out

Would I be correct in suggesting that DOMs,in fact anyone who enters and leaves sorting office premises should sign in and out.
Under Health and Safety how would you know if they are present in emergency situations if they don't do this?

Thats the same reason they have registration at schools.It would apply to everyone the correct time should be entered aswell as this could be if you have a difficult DIM be classed as "Fraud" "Dishonesty"if you know what i mean

Yes but it doesn't mean they have to sign in the same place as we do, or that it has to be a paper sheet. They can sign electronically if such a system exists, or on a sheet in their own, or the DOMs office.

But if their name is not on the list and there was a fire say,then how would you know if they are in the building if a roll call was done?

At our DO, which is on 3 floors, we sign in on our sections and the Line Manager is responsible for making sure the roll call is done. The managers one is done, if at all, by the DOM or his stand in.

As far as I am aware having a signing in an out list is not a legal requirement, although it is certainly recommended.

Slightly off subject I know but can you tell me if you have to sign on at your booked start time or as you enter the building. From a H&S view I assume its as you enter the building but from the IR view should you sign on at your duty start time or earlier? Reason being is we are being asked to sign on early in order to be ready to work at our duty start time. This is having a detrimental effect as those that want to run about are getting in earlier and earlier without the managers challenging them. I have asked that managers also do the same but have yet to get a sensible answer.

We sign in at our "actual time" as we get to the signing in sheet - the official start time is already entered for everyone. I put the time I come through the gate as its not a time control sheet (as in tied to pay) , but an attendance register.

If they wanted me to sign in before my start time they would be paying me for it.
I don't do anything for Royal Mail outside my contracted hours and that includes signing in and out.
