Unite supports Save Our Royal Mail campaign

Unite, the country’s largest union, is standing with members of the Communications Workers Union (CWU) who have overwhelmingly voted against government plans to privatise the Royal Mail.

Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke said: “Our members working in the Royal Mail are in management and senior management positions.

“They are becoming increasingly concerned about the proposed privatisation and its implications for the public, pensioners, the disabled and small companies - as well as future employment and their pension provisions.

“Their concerns reflect the overwhelming vote against privatisation carried this week by CWU members.”

As part of its campaign of opposition to privatisation, the CWU has announced a lobby of parliament on 2 July and at a meeting today (Thursday 20 June) between the Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke and the general secretary of the CWU Billy Hayes, it was agreed that both unions will now work jointly to Save The Royal Mail from being sold off.

Unite members working in the Royal Mail and all Unite members are being encouraged to attend the lobby on 2 July.

The senior Unite CMA reps also requested that Unite call a special delegate conference during the pension consultation period to debate the issues of privatisation, the proposed pension changes and the next steps in the campaign.

The meeting welcomed the clear decisions of the CWU consultative ballot and acknowledged that such an overwhelming mandate, with such a high response rate, provided a clear indication of the strength of opposition to privatisation.

Exactly.
Rather than have pop at the managers and unite, we should encourage them to join in. After all, it would be in their own best interests as well as ours. They would pay a high price in terms of job losses etc. if we are privatised. I did point it out to a couple of managers in my office, but they didn't see it my way.
There are already too many managers in RM, so they will be culled, but if there are less posties too, there will be even more of them to go.
They need to wake up and smell the coffee. Maybe Unite already have.
The more pressure that gets piled on, the better.

Well, that would just go to prove how short sighted and stupid they are.

The thruth is, Unite members are the ones under the biggest threat from privatisation, why ? because they are spineless self-indulgant pr**s, (personal view) so they will be the first to be rolled over.
Their 'I'm alright jack' attitude will come back to bite them firmly on the backside, and it will be near impossible to sympothise with them, let alone support them, not least because they have never supported us.
Unite need to grow some.
