Over 85% of postmen from the Lisbon distribution area were on strike on Friday according to the trade unions.

“Looking at the numbers for the postmen, out of 780 workers, 85.12% joined the strike”, the secretary general of the SNCT union said.

Vitor Narciso said he was only aware of two post offices that were open but the post office administration had ordered all post offices to open and the station masters would have to deal with the customers.

The union leader also told Lusa that over 87% of the night shift workers in Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto had been on strike.

Friday’s 24-hour strike was in protest against “the privatisation of the post office” and to “defend a quality public service”.

The post office is terminating a process of reorganising its network by closing 124 post offices and opening 78 postal points.

This past Friday’s strike is to be repeated next Friday too.

Good to see our Portuguese brothers and sisters resisting privatisation. It will be be RM's employees who are next in line for cuts in terms and conditions, and job losses with privatisation.
