Left handed dogs are more likely to be aggressive to strangers than those that are right-pawed, a study has found.
Australian academics tested a group of dogs to see which paw they preferred to use for basic tasks and then analysed their behavioural traits.

They found while there was no link with levels of excitability or attention seeking, the animals which were 'left-pawed' were much more likely to act aggressively towards people they did not know.

Like humans, dogs are left and right pawed and prefer to use one paw over the other for tasks.

Similarly to humans, the left paw is controlled by the right side of the brain, which is linked with negative emotions.

Experts say the findings reflect what has previously been observed in humans.

Dr Luke Schneider, from the University of Adelaide, told the Telegraph left pawed dogs scored almost twice as high as those with no preference, and also higher than dogs with right paws.

He said: 'There is research in the human world as well that positive and negative emotions can be located in the left and right hemispheres and it seems to go the same way in humans and other animal species, that the negative emotions are located in the right hemisphere. There are many, many overlaps between human and animal brains.'

The experiment, which was published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior, saw around 75 dogs given a special cylindrical toy with food inside it.

The researchers then watched and noted how the dog interacted with it as they tried to get at the food, marking how many times the dog used its left or right paw.

A third were right-pawed, a third were left, and a third were 'ambilateral' and were able to use both paws equally.

The left pawed dogs scored almost twice as high for stranger aggression than the ambilateral ones and much higher than the righter pawed ones too.

The dogs studied in the experiment included labradors, border collies, golden retrievers and Shetland sheepdogs, but none of them were particularly aggressive.

None of the dogs used in the research had aggression problems.

Researchers now want to carry out more research on animals, specifically those that are more animals.

What use are the tests to us anyhow? Are we supposed to send a letter out to all dog owners asking them to test their dogs and post the results on their gate!

If you want to find out if number sixteen's dog is aggressive or not, the only option there which doesn't mean I have to carry toys, treats or sticky stuff is to shake hands with the bugger.

I think the answer is yes. I believe something like 90% (may be little give either way) of the world's incarcerated murderers are left handed. Even though they make up approx. 10% of the population.
