zero hour contract

just a quick question worked at cardiff on and of since october on zero hour contract last 3 weeks no work at all is this something that happens this time of year or is it got something to do with them trying to sell off part of the group and there trying to keep wages down

It's quiet at our MC compared with this time last year.... on top of the other factors. Packets seem well down since the price changes, or it could be people are just not buying so much on-line

Usually 2 but last week they paid me for the Friday meaning I'll only get 1 shifts pay next Friday, very annoying!

Is it incredibly easy to cancel the contract? Seem to have misplaced the agreement. I have not had any work for a while. Randomly received the odd one or two text messages a few weeks ago as I would have been back to week 1 of 12, but it was only for a four hour shift and at a time I simply cannot do. Phoned them from time to time and was told they didn't have any shifts available. Other times I tried to contact but the line was constantly busy so eventually give up. Decided just to do a rapid reclaim as of last week.

You can sign on AND work for an Agency. You dont have to "SIgn off" if you get a bit of work (less than 16 hours). Your benefit will be reduced by what you earn each week and can result in you getting zero benefit some weeks... but your claim will be left open.
You have to fill in a form every week you work with hours and payments recorded.

However this system is easier if you have set work of less than 16 hours (say 15 hrs every week) and gets complicated when it's for casual work

Who can get Jobseeker's Allowance?
To get Jobseeker's Allowance you must be:

•available for, capable of and actively seeking work
•aged 18 or over but below State Pension age
•working less than 16 hours per week on average, depending on the amount of your wage
•not be in certain types of education
•not be receiving certain other benefits
•resident in the UK

Definitely keep your claim open...at this time of the year shifts will be sparse as long as you don't work more than 16 hours your claim will be left open and your benefit (JSA) adjusted to account for what you earn. Speak to your adviser. If you go over 16 hours then it does get very complicated, you have to sign off. The DHSS doesn't have the brains or aptitude to understand how Casual/Zero hours contracts work.

On your other point. The I no longer work for Angard was the total lack of work given to me last Christmas.Although I had received some text messages for shift at a mail centre 30 miles away (Medway) even with AWR wages it wasn't worth the travel for a 4 hour shift.

Angard basically accused me of turning down work. Didn't call me and I ended up without work for so long I needed re-vetting.

In the end without even asking I was sent a P45 in the post (no cover letter, no thanks for 2 years work).

Yes it normally goes quiet.

One of our problems now is that Angard/RM, at our MC, have taken on new casuals (with AWR casuals lucky to get more than 10 hours a week before they took on new casuals). Looks like it is time to move on.

Apart from new casuals being cheaper the number of hours that we were getting did not justify the taking on of more casuals.

On top of the "too many casuals" issue, RM are now only ordering casuals at the last minute as a matter of policy. It seems to be too often to be accidental. Most calls are now "Can you get in straight away?" or "Can you start in 45 mins?"

Thats the same for permanent staff, one of ours got a call at 0545 and was asked if he do a couple of hours docket starting at 6:15.

has that been for shifts during the day? haven't done a day shift in a while
