Implications on mail after the UK's exit from the EU

For outward international mail, Royal Mail only offer two of the Universal Postal Union categories of supplementary services which relate to barcodes and/or tracking - registered but not insured (via International Signed For) and Express (via Airsure). Registered items have barcodes starting with R and Express items have barcodes starting with L.

As you can see from the list of S10 identifiers at http://pls.upu.int/document/2011/an/cep ... 00_r00.pdf, any barcode sent internationally starting AA-AZ must relate to a recorded delivery service (as defined by the UPU). Royal Mail doesn't offer an international recorded delivery service and thus any barcode starting with an A and ending in GB is solely for use within the UK (unless RM set up a bilateral agreement with a specific country to use the A prefix for some other type of mail).
