Save Our Royal Mail Website

Not everything in life should be defined by its monetary value. Royal Mail is part of the fabric of the nation – we don’t want to see it ripped apart. If the Royal Mail is sold off affordable prices, rural services and free postal services for our service men and women as well as vulnerable groups will disappear. The aim of our campaign is to persuade politicians that they must act now and guarantee that these vital services do not disappear. We have the support of groups and individuals representing the countryside, the blind and partially sighted, the elderly and small businesses. You can help us by getting involved. Use the social networking tools on this site to promote the campaign and most importantly write to your MP setting out your concerns. As our campaign grows so will this site. So please return to us regularly to keep updated on news and other campaign developments.

New broad based coalition launches to protect postal services from threat of a Royal Mail sell off

A new campaign was launched today aiming to highlight the threat an autumn Royal Mail sell off will place on postal services throughout the UK.

With support from groups and individuals representing the countryside, the elderly, small businesses and the blind, the Save Our Royal Mail campaign has identified six very real threats to the public:

Prices will shoot up – stamp prices are no longer regulated and VAT may eventually apply. The £1 First Class stamp might not be far off.

Small businesses will suffer – For many small businesses, especially those in rural areas there is often no alternative to the Royal Mail. Suffering from high energy bills, businesses can ill afford to see the cost of using the postal service rocket.

The countryside will be left isolated – Everyone understands that it costs more than the price of a stamp to deliver a letter to a rural address. Despite assurances to the contrary, the postal services regulator OFCOM is working to determine the real cost for deliveries to rural areas. It has also been looking recently at future options for the daily delivery service to addresses in the countryside.

Free postal services to the blind under threat? – The “Articles for the blind” service is essential but expensive to operate. No privately owned business will want to bear this cost and despite previous assurances we now find that OFCOM has been reviewing the future of “universal” services.

HM Forces postal lifeline scrapped? – Royal Mail provides a freepost service for British forces. These letters and parcels from loved ones provide a vital boost to our troops in conflict. But a privately owned Royal Mail will not want to maintain this non-profit making service – and neither can it be compelled to.

Royal Mail’s heritage lost –Ruthless cost cutting may well see red pillar boxes go the same way as the iconic GPO telephone boxes. And this time it won’t be possible to stop Royal Mail renaming itself Consignia.

Save Our Royal Mail Campaign Director Mario Dunn said: “Save Our Royal Mail is a broad based and growing campaign. We want to take our message to the politicians – do not rush headlong into a sell off if you cannot guarantee a privatised Royal Mail will constrain its prices and provide these services at their current level”.

LTB 230/13 - SAVE OUR ROYAL MAIL – LAUNCH OF COALITION

No: 230/13

Ref: GS 18.9

Date: 9 April 2013

To: All Branches

Dear Colleague

SAVE OUR ROYAL MAIL - LAUNCH OF COALITION

As previously announced, the union is building a coalition to campaign to Save Our Royal Mail. Our partners in managing the coalition, PSA Communications, have started bringing together other supportive organisations. Currently, this includes Countryside Alliance, Royal National Institute of the Blind and the National Pensioners Convention and PSA are in discussion with other influential organisations.

The Coalition has been formed around 6 principles. These are aimed at encouraging organisations to join the coalition whilst remaining in line with CWU's key aims. These principles are:

Prices will shoot up
Small businesses will suffer
The countryside will be left isolated
Free postal services to the blind under threat?
HM Forces postal lifeline scrapped
Royal Mail's heritage lost

Yesterday, Monday 8th April 2013, the coalition formally launched. The launch commenced with an announcement of the intentions of the coalition and a key story on the threat to rising prices for consumers from privatisation. You may have seen the article on the front page of Monday's Daily Telegraph regarding the threat of the £1 stamp. In addition the launch had significant coverage nationally and locally. These included Mail Online, AOL Money, the Morning Star and the Daily Express on the first morning and many other publications following the story up later in the day. Many regional news outlets carried interviews with the coalition.

In addition, the coalition launched its website saveourroyalmail.org

This is the website we need to drive traffic to. It includes collecting contact details so that we can build a database of supporters as well as providing a vehicle for people to write to individual MP's. All of our national SORM campaign material will carry links to this site as does, cwu.org

Finally, the coalition launched the first e-petition. This is linked to rising prices and is in the name of the campaign. This will be followed by 5 more petitions and we are looking at nominating 5 individuals to lead those. This petition is directly linked from saveourroyalmail.org and can also be found at the online petition site, change.org by browsing the search facility on that site.

Yesterday also saw the launch of the Facebook group, 'save our royal mail', the twitter account, @saveourRM and hashtag #saveourroyalmail . Branches should maximise social media activity.

These campaign initiatives will remain live and will be promoted through our own communications.

Further updates on the coalition campaign will follow.

Any enquiries on this LTB should be addressed to the General Secretary's Office quoting reference GS 11.0

Yours sincerely

BILLY HAYES DAVE WARD
General Secretary Deputy General Secretary (Postal)
