Is it possible not to be affiliated to any party directly but seed the money to those who closely ally themselves to the aspirations of the membership?

Yes.
The union already "affiliates" to a group of directly sponsored MPs led by Michael Connarty.
Where it becomes difficult is picking and choosing individual MP's without having to ballot your members every couple of months.
Under the provisions of the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation)
Act 1992 (as amended) (“the Act”), a trade union may not apply any part of its
funds in the furtherance of the political objects set out at section 72 of the Act
unless those objects have first been approved as an object of the union by a
resolution passed on a ballot of its members.
You would need a resolution that was flexible enough to allow the union to choose MPs that might have different political agendas but you would also need to be able to control the partisan arguments within the union about why we're supporting him or her from this or that party.
