During this year the Royal Mail is effecting changes in the way it runs its business, with the intention that it should be able to obtain access to private capital (as other businesses of this magnitude may do) during 2013/14.

Our post offices and mail services are such a key part of everyday life, commercial and domestic, that there have been concerns that this could bring about changes to the provision of services.

Although changes are under way, there are still discussions going on between all the parties involved.

It is worth recalling that, in 2011, parliament secured the universal postal service through the Postal Services Act. That underpinned the service of six days a week, with a uniform pricing structure.

Ofcom regulates our postal services and it has a statutory duty to ensure the provision of that universal service.

Ofcom will be looking at the ways of approaching competition and, among other things, that will include looking at how employees of the Royal Mail could have the opportunity to own shares in the company for which they work.

There have been concerns that allowing Royal Mail to seek capital on the open market could jeopardise the network of post offices.

The Post Office is a separate company from the Royal Mail: both organisations have independent boards running them.

The government made a clear commitment to the future of the Post Office in 2010, with funding of £1.34billion over four years. This is to maintain a network of at least 11,500 branches, with modernisation of 6,000 branches.

The Post Office signed a long-term commercial agreement with Royal Mail in 2012 for the continued supply of services.

Last year, there was some surprise among commentators that the growth of trends such as internet shopping had actually boosted the Royal Mail.

The purchases that individuals make online have to be despatched and delivered, after all!

We have a democracy that in the last 30 years has privatised everything apart from the Royal Family- what's there to worry about? We are after all the most unequal country in the western world,so give the guy a break is nobody proud to British anymore? If theres was any other way im sure OUR free press would be splashing it across the front page with an apology so get with the programme for Christ sake
