Will we eventually see a 5 day (or less) delivery?

If or when we are "privitised" will we at some point go down to a 5 day week? or even 3-4 day week!

Surely from a profit making sense for an outside company reducing wages by 20% or so is something they will push for??

5 day service within the next 10 years is nearly certain in my opinion.

There have been rumours that we will drop to a 5 day service for a while. There is no guarantee this will be the cancellation of Saturdays, although that would logically be the best option, but since when has logic mattered in this company? The only reason to drop to a 5 day service is to save money, it immediately allows the company to cut nearly a sixth of staff and their wages. Would be quite a saving as it's RM's biggest cost. Think it would be in the hundreds of millions.

I think a lot of members would be up for a mon-friday job, knocking sat on the head. If no job losses. Would mean more P/T and not replacing those "retiring" i'd guess.

I think all memebers will be up for Mon-Fri, but it will cost jobs, there is no doubt about that. It isn't possible to cut a sixth of the workforce through natural wastage, i.e. retirees, people leaving of their own volition. There would, I think, be quite a lot willing to take EVR/VR, if the terms offered would be reasonable, though recently these types of offers have been a shadow of what they were even just a few years ago. But I don't know if all of that, should it happen, would prevent redundancies.

You are making the assumption that once privatised the terms of MTSF will be with us forever.
How massive would that queue be if the offer was made under statutory redundancy terms?

20 years service from age 20 equals a grand total of...20 weeks pay.
Would you still leave after 20 years for £8,000?

The truth as well is that even under MTSF terms the number willing to leave is always a tiny fraction of the number who say they are willing to leave.
The Job market isn't exactly a joy at the moment.

Tbh I would love Monday to Saturday. It is my belief that it will come.... one day. I also think that in the long run it might help a lot of people. If we retain the 5 day over 6 model of working, much favoured by our union, full time jobs will be gone for sure. You can virtually guarantee it. If you don't think that will happen then take a look at your own office. Look at the numbers of part time staff in your office. When I started 20+ years ago we had about 10 part time. We now have about 40. The office has about 90 staff members. Do the maths. Believe me, the unions failure to grasp the opportunity to go 5 days, Monday to Friday when SDD came in, was the biggest mistake ever. They failed to protect your jobs and are, through failing to enforce the 1 in 4 Saturdays agreed in the last agreement, complicit in the demise of this business and YOUR future. Hope I'm wrong but can't see it.

How may full time 40 hour week staff are there now compared to years gone by
The Royal Mail only employs part time or short tem staff these days
People they would soon get rid of if they wanted to

I think Monday to Friday will be the future. little amount of people in on a Saturday to deliver specials.

It may be much sooner than is expected. Ofcom's first review of USO is due in April 2013. Don't expect it this review but they have the power to recommend change if deemed to be in public interest.Govt stated it wouldn't changeUSO during life of this parliament but there may be another U turn!

I just have a feeling there's going to be some big big changes by this time next year.
