Item being returned to sender

Post by umzyi »

Hello,

I am desperately in need of help of some advice.

I along with my wife sent our passports to DWP (Job Centre) in November. I included the prepaid special delivery return envelope for the return of documents. We made several queries regarding the return of our documents and but nobody knew where our documents were! We escalated the issue to the complaints department and finally received a call in first week of december that they had returned the documents and they were sitting in the local royal mail depot. I visited the local depot and found out that, there were sitting there for more than 2 weeks and had been returned to sender around the 12th of December.

I also found out that DWP didn't use our special delivery envelope, rather used their own recorded delivery envelope. Furthermore, when the delivery attempt was made, Royal mail never left a card for us.

Since that day I have been calling DWP to check whether they have received the documents back? They tell me that they are still waiting! I have been provided with the recorded delivery tracking number which says:

"Your item with reference A***********GB is being returned to sender.
This is either because the item wasn't picked up by the recipient, or because we couldn't deliver it. Sorry for any inconvenience".

This message is on the website for around 3 weeks now. I am extremely worried now that whether my documents are lost? I have checked with DWP whether they have a return address on the back of the envelope? They have confirmed that all their envelopes has a returned address.

I spoke to a gentleman from DWP on the 28th of this month and he thinks that the documents have been lost

But when I spoke to royal mail they said I should wait more, as there may be a backlog.

Could someone please please advice me what can I do get that letter back? It has mine and wife's passport on which we have visa stamps. If we lose them this mean we will be in great trouble as we need to reapply the passports and pay a lot of money to UKBA for new visas. Moreover, I need to travel abroad in 2 weeks time, as my mother will be going through a brain surgery.

neither Royal mail customer service advisors or DWP advisors are helping me. I am in a very desperate situation. Is there anything I can do or go call somewhere or go to collect from somewhere?

Will tracking status every change to say that they are lost or it will keep saying that they are being returned to sender?

Please advice me whether I should wait for another week after new year or shall I report them as lost to police and start the process for reapplying them?

Thanks

It's most unusual that "when the delivery attempt was made, Royal mail never left a card for us" so might you have overlooked the red advice card?
Also maybe the DWP should do a further check if it's been returned to them as they're not the most efficient of organisations.
Hope it's soon found.

http://www.royalmail.com/trackdetails" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That page should hopefully say what the reason was and when delivery was attempted

I am 100% confident that no card was left and I am being very honest. :)

I checked with DWP on the 28th and they confirmed that they have not received the letter back yet.

Here is the reason shown on the site :

11/12/12 13:25 RETURNED TO CO
22/11/12 11:54 UNDELIVERED22/11/12

Do think it is lost or shall I keep on waiting?

I would say the chances are the DWP would get them back, there may also be a possiblity due to large numbers that the item may not get signed for their end as as well.

For the record, there is no way in the world would I ever send anyone my passport in the post, registered or not.
I also found out that DWP didn't use our special delivery envelope
They wouldn't,more so because they are dumb arses.

It's also possible that it wasn't delivered because they, the DWP got the address badly wrong.

Well I have made one of the biggest mistake of my life and now I am suffering it. I really really hope that DWP receive it back. But my concern is that its already been 3 weeks now and the status on the royal mail website dosn't change from being returned to as oppose to has been returned or lost.

I have been advised by a friend of mine to contact local mp so that his office can make enquires from Royal Mail and DWP to find out where the passports are? Do you suggest me contacting him regarding this issue? I mean, Does he have authority to chase it up for me?

Yes.

Will it help to find it? No

Will it help you to get compensation/new passports in a timely manner? Probably.

I have been told by DWP to start applying for new passports as they will recompense me for the cost. It is going to cost £102 for my passport on an urgent basis, my wife for £70 and then I have to get my visa stamp, that will cost £660 on a same day service rather than waiting for 3 months. Plus my train tickets to consulates and embassies. Even with this route It is going to take me 4 weeks.

However, I want to leave on the 10th of January to be with my mom for her surgery. :(

Contact customer services and ask them to put the items on the system so that if/when they get to the RLB centre to be opened to find an address, they'll know where to send them back to.

However, the DWP really are frickin useless so I'm not surprised by half of what you said and I really wouldn't be surprised if they sent them to the wrong address either! They've sent me mail with the wrong name on TWICE and told me after 6 months of me chasing up an appeal that they had no appeal on record...

I'd take the complaint further with the DWP and make sure they pay up.
