Privatised in 2013?

I spoke to my rep who may have filled me in about the privatisation a bit more than most, he says it will happen in 2013 and staff will be kept but put on minimum wage with the union scrapped. I asked if we would get a settlement which is what usually happens when there is a revision but he wasnt sure- does anyone else think we will be paid off from royal mail. I was thinking of leaving this year being only part time and only taking home roughly £200 per week which obviously isnt much to live on. Should I leave now or wait until it privatises?
Can anyone shed some light?

17% staff gone. Scrap sat day , no first class mail, maximum 34 hours on a week on min wage, so around £200 without tax .

The future is not bright, from what I understand TUPE will only work for 2 years and then you will be on a new contract, I would imagine they may try to offer you voluntary redundancy terms, things will be different the public will realise what a golden age it was before it was privatised, after years of complaining and especially the usual right Wing moaners "sack them all and get some dolers to do it instead" comments, you pay peanuts you get monkeys.

No, its not looking good this should prove interesting reading to get some idea of what happens in a privatisation.

Yes he expressed a somewhat bleak opinion.

Minimum wage - the Union will fight that - as would I.

Union Scrapped - As far as I know not possible unless they have a vote for de-recognition and with the current membership of the Union within Royal Mail, even with a rigged ballot, I can't see that happening at least for a few years.

Payment for revision can only happen if we have an agreement that allows it, you can have revisions without payments, in fact thats the normal situation.

Only you can make your mind whether to leave or not - however my suggestion would be to only leave once you have a confirmed job in place.

The most likely sale of RM will be through an IPO share sale.
It is unlikely that TUPE will apply in such circumstances because the primary employer,Royal Mail Holdings will not have changed,only the transfer of ownership of shares in the employer from Government to private hands.

Even when TUPE applies there is no set time limit on it's protection,only that a reasonable time should elapse between sale and when any changes are proposed and that the changes should not be as a direct result of the sale...usually around 12 months
TUPE itself is a very weak piece of legislation and i wouldn't bank on it for much.

There are some rumours of a partial sale to an interested party,who that would be is anyone's guess but it would be interesting where the CWU would stand if it was a partial management buyout....

On the one hand that would ensure continuity in approach and some stability which i'm sure the union would welcome...
On the other hand that would ensure continuity in approach or more of the same shambles the present management structure has already brought to the table...

Fair point fishtank hadn't considered the shares bit rather than an actual takeover. what ever happens the picture is not looking good.
