Royal Mail has appointed three investment banks to advise it as preparations to privatise the world’s oldest postal service step up a gear.

Barclays, which had already been advising the state-owned company, has been confirmed as its adviser, but Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs have been brought in to provide extra support.


Royal Mail said these would be “responsible for providing additional support relating to early investor soundings to assist with government decision-making on the form and timing of a future sale”.

It added that no formal appointments relating to any future sale had been made at this stage. “These would be subject to a separate government process at the appropriate time and will depend on its chosen structure and timing. Government ministers will decide when and how the company is sold and they have been clear that all options are on the table.”

A decision on privatisation is expected in 2013 or 2014. Royal Mail, which employs about 150,000, is thought likely to be worth up to £2bn-£3bn if floated on the stock exchange, which would put it straight into the FTSE 100 and make it the largest privatisation since the government sold the railways in the 1990s.

Other options include an early sale of a minority stake to an investor or group of investors – probably private equity firms – ahead of a flotation.
