ROYAL MAIL PREPARES FOR 2BN STOCK MARKET FLOAT

THE Royal Mail is set to give the green light to a £2billion float tomorrow giving the public, including thousands of staff, the chance to snap up shares.
The Government-owned business, one of the country's biggest employers with 159,000 staff, is expected to reveal that initial talks between it and City institutions about a possible listing have been lined up ahead of an investment roadshow early next year.

The float, which Royal Mail chief executive Moya Greene wants to be open to its employees, including postmen and women and the public, would likely come in the third-quarter of 2013.

Barclays is understood to be advising the Royal Mail with UBS acting for the Government. It is understood that the Post Office will not be included in the sale. Both the Royal Mail and the Government did not comment.

The announcement, which follows years of speculation, is expected to come alongside Royal Mail's half-year results which are being tipped to reveal an increase in profits helped by a continued uplift in its core letters division and growth in its parcels business.

Greene has made its parcels division, once a drag on the firm as it struggled to cope with the boom in demand for online shopping, a core part of her restructuring since she joined in 2010 from Canada Post.

She has slashed jobs and invested in new facilities with the Royal Mail now online giant Amazon's biggest client.

The letters business has also been hit by the growth of emailing and social media with rivals, such as TNT, also looking to roll-out postal services from door-to-door.

Last year the Royal Mail delivered 58million letters a day as well as 1.2billion parcels.

One banker involved in the process said the group's improved operating performance was the main driver behind the timing of the float. "This is the absolute key," he said.

"If Royal Mail can show that the core business has turned the corner and has become attractive to private investors, we are on track for a sale."

This year's move by the Government to take on the Royal Mail pension scheme, including its £10billion deficit, and less stringent regulations from industry watchdog Ofcom on the setting of stamp prices is also likely to tempt more investors into buying shares.

Business Minister Michael Fallon is understood to be its lead player in the privatisation talks.

Greene The Government sees a float, rather than an outright sale, as the best future for Royal Mail given the lack of trade buyers in the present economic climate and the potential political fall-out through selling to a private equity firm.

However its move is still likely to draw opposition from postal unions as it fears it will lead to price rises for consumers.

The Government's move will also help shore up its own finances battered by the financial crisis.

Image and you appear quite passionate about that.

The good news is that the Gov and RM Board want to give us the opportunity to get some. The bad news is the language they are using may mean they want us to pay for them.

so this would suggest that we can trade our existing shares to the new share price,at the end of the day i never got any
letter to say the shares were void so our old shares must still be valid it still amazes me how one year our shares were worthless and now were all millionares.
