golfing trolley

Hi I am Peggy Duncan, I work for Romec at Winterbourne Delivery Office in Bristol. I have been a cleaner there for 3 years, and have recently been conditionally offered the job after security clearence as a Postwoman. I seem to have run into a problem before I start. I have seen postmen and women using the golfing trolley to deliver post in my local area. When I asked my Manager if I could have one when I started, he said that I had to prove that I needed to provide a medical letter to say I needed one. As I pass through 2 different delivery offices areas on my way to work, I see young postpeople delivering their mail some as young as late teens. And in my delivery office there is a photo on the wall of the different modes of delivery you can use to deliver your post. obviously because I am not an employee yet, I cannot get access to speak to anyone else. I do not really want this down on my record, when other offices give these trolleys freely. I have also spoken to a couple of them, and they say that they have more energy by using the trolley than carrying all their mail. Could anyone please advise. thanks

In a way he is right.

To explain the golf trolleys are usually used either when an office has undergone a "Delivery Methods" Revision. In simple language when they have changed over from 1 postie doing 1 round - to 2 posties doing 1 big round out of van. The trolleys then normally become mandatory equipment for that round/loop if deemed suitable and after a risk assessment.

If the office has not gone through a revision then golf trolleys are only used when their is a health and safety concern (usually medically based), which is probably why he asked for a medical letter.

The reason why some have trolleys is their deliveries are planned at 4 hours and over, if your office is still using over the shoulder pouches then the planned limit is 3.5 hours. There are also weight limits on the pouches which is 16kg, as opposed to 32kg with the golf trolleys.

Also you will eventually (probably I should say) will use a trolley as ALL offices will go through this modernisation process at some point in the next few years (in fact next year was meant to be the last year for it to be introduced )
