Hard-up city jobseekers have been given a boost with news that 400 extra seasonal staff will be taken on by DHL in the run-up to Christmas.
The new jobs have been created at DHL’s Kingston Park warehouse in Fletton and offer a variety of shift patterns for prospective workers.
The news was unexpected as it comes less than two months after the logistics firm announced 350 new Christmas posts at the warehouse.
Chief executive of Peterborough Chamber of Commerce, John Bridge, said the new posts were a sign of the confidence major firms had in the city.
He said: “We all understand the nature of employment at the moment, which is why it is very positive we have companies performing so well they need to take on additional staff over the Christmas period.
“It is a vital opportunity for families to earn money over a period of time which is important to a lot of people.
“While these are temporary jobs, we are also developing links with companies across the city and from outside for further investment and full time permanent jobs.”
Geoff Taylor, from Blue Arrow, who are recruiting the jobs, said that those staff taken on could potentially secure long-term work with the firm.
He said: “DHL is already a large employer within the local area, so it is fantastic news that they are recruiting a further 400 new staff to work at their Kingston Park warehouse in Peterborough to help meet the additional seasonal demands.
“Whilst these new roles are temporary to start with, there are genuine long-term work opportunities for the right people. We are therefore keen to let as many local people as possible aware of these opportunities.
“These roles are a great opportunity for local people to earn money in the run up to Christmas, and beyond, at the same time as gaining value experience of working within a busy, but friendly, warehouse environment.”
A series of introduction days are also being organised today (25 October), Tuesday, 30 October and Thursday, 1 November, at the warehouse.

Jobs on offer for variety of warehouse shifts
Warehouse operative roles on offer in the new recruitment drive will receive a basic salary from £6.50 per hour, but there will be a selection of additional financial incentives in place to give workers the chance to earn more.
There are a variety of different shift patterns on offer for new workers, including early, late-start and night shifts.
A spokesman for Blue Arrow said no experience was needed for the posts.
The jobs have been created to ensure the logistics firm meets demand over the extremely busy Christmas period.

I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
