Cyprus - End pensioner postmen jobs, say deputies

PARLIAMENT yesterday called on the Postal Services to cease the employment of pensioners and hourly-paid public employees as postmen so that positions can be created for the unemployed.

According to the chairman of the House Labour Committee, AKEL’s Andreas Fakontis, there are currently 214 postmen in various communities who are paid based on the number of residents they serve and the amount of work they do.

He said 31 per cent of those are pensioners, hourly-paid workers, or municipal workers.

“The Committee asked the postal services to examine the possibility of replacing the pensioners and hourly-paid workers with unemployed people,” said Fakontis.

He said the current rate for distributing post in communities is between €200 and €900 a month.

“The committee is sensitive towards the living conditions of pensioners, however the times demand bigger sensitivity for the unemployed and especially long-term unemployed youths,” said Fakontis.
