New to the job.

Hi, I've just started on the job with a 25 hours contract. Please can you advice me what to aspect?
Manager said I should learn my walk with an experienced postman and that my training can last as long as 3 months, this I am happy with.
However today I went round for the first time with this other chap but he said that we were in partnership with someone else and he would jump in into our walk.
But then we would do the same when his walk started, so effectively I walked 2 walks. he also said that he would train me only for the first week and that next week I would be on my own. I don't think I can be ready so early and I am a bit worried to be burned out and not to be able to settle in.

You should get a week training with an experienced postman or the workplace coach if your office has one.
They should then leave you on the same walk for 6 - 12 weeks to allow you to build up your confidence.
If your office already has shared vans you should always have someone with more experience with you.

After the bedding in period you will probably become a reserve which means you will cover different duties to cover holidays and sickness.
In some cases you might be required to work in nearby offices as staffing dictates.

I started on a Wednesday a couple of weeks ago, on a 30 hour 3 month contract. Went out with my Workplace Coach (didn't know that was what he was for a couple of days) for three days, then on the Saturday I was alone but a casual did half the deliveries. Monday was my day off and since the Tuesday I have been doing it all myself - part time so most of the stuff is on the frame I add the packets and do the redirects etc then pouch it all up. During the first few days I didn't think I'd be remotely ready to go it alone, but the only thing stopping me enjoying it is getting it done in time due to the number of pouches. I know how Mickey73 feels about not being ready etc - I still feel that way but am improving, though I think I'll feel this way for some time to come.

Thanks clashcityrocker for giving me an idea of the timescale too - no one has bothered to tell me anything about how long I'll be doing it for. I've failed to finish on two days and finished a bit late today. I cannot see how it is possible to do it all in the time on anything but a quiet day, there is too much tooing and froing to the drop off points.

Neither can we.
Only the Royal Mail planners seem to know how a park&loop(shared van) duty can be done in time and they aren't telling.

I suppose it's about doing the hard grasp at the beginning in order to be able to enjoy the job later.
