Postal workers to vote on strikes

Royal Mail recently asked for a stamp price rise to cut its losses
More than 130,000 postal workers are to be balloted on strike action in a row over pay.
The Communication Workers' Union (CWU) rejected a 2.5% pay rise offer and said it would begin balloting staff later this month.

The CWU said Royal Mail's business plan would lead to 40,000 job losses, pay cuts, mail centres and delivery office closures and threaten pensions.

The Royal Mail said it was a fair offer in a "competitive" market.

It added that the recent opening up of the UK's postal sector meant it had lost business to rivals.

The CWU has been calling for a 27% pay rise over five years, which it says would bring general worker pay in line with the national average.

But Royal Mail said such a pay deal would be "madness", adding it was "disappointed" by the union's decision to hold a strike ballot.

"For the union to demand a 27% increase in pay and a shorter working week - at a cost of £1bn - is madness given Royal Mail already pays its people 25% more than its rivals pay and is 40% less productive," a Royal Mail spokesman said.

"To call for strike action when we are already rapidly losing market share to those rivals is also insane and shows that the union has no understanding of the very tough commercial environment we are operating in."

However, the CWU argued that the Royal Mail had reneged on a deal agreed last year to limit the impact of competition and automation.

"Royal Mail has abandoned our agreed approach in favour of a short sighted Business Plan that amounts to a cost-cutting frenzy, reductions in pay and a defeatist attitude towards competition," the CWU said.

Should the CWU vote back action, it could trigger the first national post walkout in 10 years.

Ballot papers will be sent out to CWU members on 22 May and the result of the vote will be announced on 7 June.

At Nottingham, the management is pushing through the changes to working practices through "executive action" -- so we could be having later starts, folded walks and all that in June. As a result the union is balloting locally, and it is the ballot papers for that which
we will get tommorrow.

Needless, to say my vote will not change when the time comes for the National ballot. I'm a made as hell about it.

You've got your ballot a bit lively,us in SE Lon are having a seperate one an all,ours runs along the national one.
We've got the same s**t coming in down here.

Just may be to give you a little history.

This all started quite a while ago. When the Transport review and TDS or the SDD where in the process of being planned the question came up then of later arrivals in mail centres therefore the need for later starts and later finishes at mail centres for nights inwards. This lead to see what if any changes would be needed to other shifts at mail centres particularly as you can only have one shift at time using machines and frames. This then came up again with the TDS/SDD and altering the shifts at delivery offices. With delivery offices it already went back to the abolition of the 'B' delivery. They can not keeppaying you to do nothing. Union did I think get some ground with double and treble 'B' and others sort next days MS.

Now it is worse. I think the mail market will be a one way thing for as was said on the Postcomm site, it is the social poster who will suffer. The USO will go out the door shortly or RM will go bust.

I am really quite surprised that RM have taken so long to even start putting in later starts.
That this was all going to happen was on the cards years ago.

I am sorry for you chaps but I really am glad I am out. I have never enjoyed myself so much since I retired.

You try to negotiate a deal,say,how many walks are to be lost in a DO,if you can't come to an agreement after going through about 3 stages,they do it anyway.
It seems to be the norm around the country at the mo,basically RM are doing what ever they want
