When will royal mail be privatised & will it affect services
I expect the quality of the service to turn to crap once they are privatised.
Does anyone know if any of these things will happen or change in the way they want the postman to do his job:
1. They wont bother with getting signatures for recorded delivery
2. Daily delivery changed to delivery every 2 days?
3. Poor online tracking service?

Depending on who buys us,I firmly believe that one of the first things that will go will be the saturday delivery, the staff will become more part time than full time,it will also mean that start and finish times will change and with lower wages and worse conditions than we have at the moment so yes the service will get worse and worse.

Late 2013 or early 2014 seems most likely but market conditions will dictate.
1. They wont bother with getting signatures for recorded delivery
I can see tracked/delivery notification taking over from a lot of the signed for products, other than that no real change.
2. Daily delivery changed to delivery every 2 days?
Depends where you live, eventually in rural areas but not soon.
3. Poor online tracking service?
Actually that's one thing that should improve just because the technology is improving and PDA's are becoming more common.

The union won't go anywhere and I don't think they will have an easy time changing any conditions.
As for delivery every other day, I live somewhere where mail that comes in today gets sent to the rural offices tomorrow and delivered. One of those places where specials are 2 day not 1. There would be far too much of a backlog to do that I would think.

It's not poor grammar.cloud360 wrote:sorry about my poor grammar, will fix it if i canElvisGaddafi wrote:Affect.
You can use both as a verb although effect is more usually a noun.
You can both effect and affect a situation.
Affect is just the better use of language in this case.

Not that it really matters but you're wrong. Effect can be used as a verb, as in 'to bring about', 'to execute' etc. but this particular usage was clearly as a verb meaning 'to change, alter' etc. I think we've had this conversation before and I know that it's my problem which I am working on (I'm starting up a local Grammar Anonymous group). Believe me, it is a curse being able to spell and have an appreciation of grammar in this day and age when people like me are scoffed at and pointed out in the street. All I can do is try not to let it effect me too much.fishtank wrote:It's not poor grammar.cloud360 wrote:sorry about my poor grammar, will fix it if i canElvisGaddafi wrote:Affect.

I think you mean two much.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Language is constantly evolving, there are no rules,it is anarchic not archaic,if enough people use effect in place of affect it will become custom and practice and there will be a revolution.ElvisGaddafi wrote: Not that it really matters but you're wrong.
Anyway perhaps it was simply a spelling mistake which takes it outside the effect of the Grammar police.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

My guess is no-one would buy it with the USO in place. But if that changes, with no universal daily delivery except for first class, then watch the queues form and the cats get fatter.
Big problem at the moment is that the whole thing is falling apart, [talk to anyone in Kent/ Sussex getting their mail through new Medway centre, which is sending out mail at random times and in no way related to the predicted times and volumes, resulting in massive cut-offs and pissed off customers] so public will soon believe that anything is an improvement.
