How effective are your Safety Reps?

Hiya all, I was curious how effective your Safety Reps were in your depots. Are they helpful, useful, do they get involved and help you or do they ignore whats going on around them and just worry about getting their deliveries completed? your thoughts and experiences please.

Ours is brilliant and takes the job seriously but finds alot of resentment from fellow posties when he is doing training and things like that. All they are bothered about is getting out on delivery and do not take health and safety serious enough in my opinion. They are not getting paid extra for doing it so think they deserve alot more respect than they get.

I agree, but why is your safety rep doing the training when you have a WPC who gets paid an extra £30 a week to do that

If colleagues of the Safety Rep are interested only in getting out of the door on delivery asap and home the Reps good work will quickly be forgotten. If you need to be thick-skinned to be a Delivery Rep, you will need it twice that as a Safety Rep. It can be the loneliest job in the world, and yet rewarding when you finally do get through to posties the merit of a particular health and safety.

If you honestly don't know who your safety rep is chances are their not representing your office very well. I don't think there's a day that goes by without a safety issuing arising in our office that needs addressing, and i would imagine it's the same for all offices, especially if you've had a revision... So yeah, not very good then.

The thing with my office, and I would guess it happens in many offices across the UK, is that there are many who moan like buggery at anything and everything. Claim they would be able to sort it out. Claim they could have the place running smoothly etc etc, but when it comes round to the time where people are requested to step forward, for roles like Safety Rep etc, these loud mouths that claim to know it all, suddenly fall silent.

Sounds like you work in our office. Your right the biggest moanars are the ones that say the jobs ruined, then come in early and work through their breaks. Our WPC has the biggest mouth ever, suppose to train people, but refuses, but still collects the £30, So unhelpful and rude!
