Retiring Bottesford postman recalls his canine battles

A POSTMAN, who once saw a dog smash through a glass door to chase him, will be delivering his last letters tomorrow (Friday).

Richard Robinson, of Flemming Avenue, Bottesford, decided to retire on his 65th birthday after 25 years in the job.

He said: “I’ve enjoyed meeting the people. I’ve got some lovely customers, I’ve known some of them all my life.

“I think I’ll miss them the most, they’re like family really.”

But it wasn’t all easy for Richard, who has been bitten by a few dogs over the years and even carries biscuits on each round to calm any aggressors.

He said: “I’ve had one or two close shaves with dogs. I even had one dog come straight through a glass door at me. I threw the letters and ran!

“I think the dogs have got worse, people say they don’t bite but there’s always a first time and it’s usually the postman.”

Despite this Richard, who has two children and two grandchildren, has enjoyed everyday of his working life.

He said: “I shall be sorry, it’s a big thing to give up but while my wife and I have got our health and strength we want to enjoy it.”

Richard and his wife Irene plan to travel and do more gardening.

He also wants to spend time on one of his favourite hobbies, his motorbike.

Richard is the last of the postmen who used to work at the old Bottesford sorting office to retire.

When he first started his round, which includes Bottesford, Easthorpe, Normington and Muston, he used to do it all on his bicycle clocking up 93 miles a week but more recently he used a post van.

He said his retirement has come around quickly.

He said: “I remember sitting in this room with my dad saying that I had two year left, it doesn’t seem long ago.

“I could’ve carried on but it’s time to enjoy myself now and spend more time with my family.

“I’d like to thank my customers for everything. they’ve all been very good.”

Richard will be celebrating the occasion tomorrow night with his family at a surprise location.

Why the f**k do people do that, firstly, I wouldn't want anybody feeding my dogs anything and I would take serious issue with anybody doing it and secondly, the next postie that comes along without a treat will get set on by the dog (quite rightly thinking they're going to get a biscuit) and then what happens..........postie bitten, dog and owner punished and all because some f**kwit postie think he knows f**king best.


Now off to calm down a bit.

Bottesford is a lovely place too...
I know quite a few posties who take dog biscuits with them on their rounds..not me though...
