Royal Mail privatisation: The fight goes on

Delegates kicked off Conference 2012 this afternoon by unanimously backing plans to relaunch the CWU's Keep the Post Public campaign.

Moving the resolution on behalf of the North East Region, John Woodhouse said: "We all know that privatisation was a key part of the Postal Services Act, but there's still no moral or economic case for it.

"Privatisation will be about the drive for profit and prices will go through the roof," he said, adding: "To save jobs and save the service, we've got to keep the post public."

Mark Walsh, from Merseyside Amal Branch, seconded the motion and he highlighted the need to win a commitment from a future Labour Government to renationalise Royal Mail if this Government does carry out its sell-off plans.

In the debate, David Wilshire from Bristol and District said that CWU members would not be taken in by the offer of "two-bob shares".

Both general secretary, Billy Hayes and deputy general secretary, Dave Ward, spoke for the motion, Billy pointing to this month's separation of the Post Office as a warning of the fragmentation that privatisation would bring.

"We're sending a clear message that privatisation is neither necessary nor inevitable, but even if it does take place, we will be campaigning to ensure that the Labour Party repeals it, Billy explained. Discussing the earlier attempts by Allan Leighton and Adam Crozier to encourage the union to 'buy-in' to a share offer, Billy added "we rejected shares and kept fighting".

Dave Ward said: "Let's get together and see how we can re-invigorate the campaign. The debate on privatisation is far from over and we have to keep the pressure on the government".

"We can still influence the outcome of this debate. I'm convinced of that."

If Dave Ward thinks he can influence the outcome then he is a better man than I thought he was, I am convinced we will be privatised before the end of the year.

Lets hope they do better with this than with retaining the principle of seniority. Cos saying you are still a public service when you are driving round in a van with UPS splashed on the side will require a very determined suspension of cognitive functions. Hang on course it won't I'm an idiot
