we lost your mail...get stuffed...but keep spending with us

Post by hypa »

Sorry in advance if I am reviving this topic from a couple of months ago but as our business has seen a significant increase in lost mail lately
it was only recently that we found out (by scouring the RM website) as RM Business Account Customers
we are no longer entitled to lost mail posted by 1st / 2nd class or Recorded delivery since Jan 9th 2012 .
Royal Mail’s retail policy excludes items posted on account which are subject to separate terms for loss, damage and delay compensation. In particular, from 9th January 2012, untracked items posted on account are not eligible for loss or damage compensation. Royal Mail has a separate Bulk Mail Compensation Scheme for delay to Bulk Mail products posted on account.
Being a small business normally if 1 or 2 items are lost a month it's not the end of the world
but in March 2012 we have had around 15 customers and counting (another one just emailed us couple of hours ago) say their goods have not arrived.
Where they have gone is another issue....

but looking forward it seems the only possible options are Tracked mail or Special delivery (as recorded delivery is not covered for compensation either).

The problem is most of our goods are posted as Large Letter or Letter formats so to send the goods by tracked it would be an increase in postage of over 500%!!
(from 1st class stamp to £2.76 per item, as long as we meet the 5000 packets per year target and average is under 1kg)

For the low value, low price items it just doesn't make sense to charge our customers an extra 2 pounds on top of the usual postage price to pay for this tracking option which takes longer than 1st class and doesn't require a signature either.

It also defies the point of internet business, where it will end up being cheaper and quicker for people to go to their local high street (ripoff) shops.
Unless of course all the business customers start using other courier companies and customers are willing to pay for the major hike in prices.

Basically having found out about this lack of compensation and having a large number of lost items recently has shattered my trust and faith in Royal Mail.

To summarize to me it looks and feels like this:
"Please spend lots of money with us everyday, if your packets get lost, you don't get anything back... :so there ....sweet!

...unless you spend even more money with us for tracked or special delivery

oh yea but don't forget you need to hit the target of 5,000 packets a year to get the price we offered you :no no

and if something does go missing by tracked or special we will only give you cost price
ie. nothing for your time, cost or effort dealing with disgruntled customers, negative feedback and sending replacements.

oh and by the way to get your 2 pence compensation you need to fill out a form which takes two hours and requires lots of evidence :left:
nice one! :Very Happy

If you haven't already got bored or sick of reading this post :Sick and have made your way this far :Applause
I would like to know please: :pray

Are there any places we can complain about this? :Boo hoo!

Are there any other options to get compensation ? :arrrghhh

Are there any other affordable cost effective solutions for sending letters / large letters reliably? (dare i ask in a RM forum! :coolr )

Any chance of getting Recorded delivery back in for compensation? :thumbup

Are there any other online sellers / business account holders that know about this change in compensation and are fuming about this too? :mad

or am I the only one who has realized this lack of compensation and had all my mail nicked recently by a wicked evil goblin

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

got a relatively cheap option for you to enable you to claim compensation, (though might not be practical to be honest) dont use your business acount to send the mail, its going to cost you that little bit extra think its a few pence difference for 1st class, go to you local post office and ask for proof of postage when you are sending, yeah i can see it being a real pain but it will allow you to claim compensation

Thank you, didn't think of that, could be a good option for customer service as normally takes 3-5 days by email :whistle

Yes! a very good option for now, especially if have something of slight value or needing to send by Recorded delivery.
luckily this also came to me at post office just on Tuesday when some customers were stockpiling 1st class stamps.

So tried this option yesterday...put most through on account but paid for a load of packets under 250g another lot of large letter under 250g, a few international and a few recorded at the PO counter

it reminds me of back in the day holding up the queue at the local PO

ironically for the last few years if i've been stuck in the queue behind someone like this been silently saying to myself "get a royal mail PPI account! its so much quicker, easier and cheaper!....(not anymore mate! )

I wonder if I can pay for stamps via a PayPal , RM, Smartstamp scheme like this to save grief at the PO but still get compensation - i haven't kept up to date so wonder if that would work.

Also the only other snag, apart from taking a fair amount more time at the PO is unfortunately the prices of stamps are also going up for personal customers at the end of this month around April 30th
so the difference could be greater - so I need to study the confusing price changes that we are in the middle of now.

it may be the case though that sending by regular personal customer stamp may work out better because it gives me a chance of compensation.

The other trouble is that we have a collection at another location, but I guess that will hopefully still hit the packetpost target.....unless we just go with another company....or pack it all in together and work for RM!! :coolr

But ye i think strategy for now (at least until April 30th) will be to continue sending a mixture of PPI and stamps at PO for now.
We will then consider sending most packets by 2nd class mail to offset the price rises of packets.
Letter and Large letter doesn't seem much difference in pricing between 1st class and 2nd class on weights under 250g so will continue sending them by PPI or PO stamp....depending on value

theres an even worse twist on this
if you use a companies retuns service via RM
then there is no compensation cover

It seems as though that currently the only option to get compensation cover for me at the moment (without using tracked or special delivery)
is to pay for stamps in advance at the post office or via Smartstamp (£5.99 monthly)

However, this means that you will also be paying Post Office prices which for a large letter weighing between 101-250g is £2.15 included Signed for and for any packet weighing up to 750g included Signed For is £3.65 as opposed to £2.76 for Tracked. This is also the case for Smartstamp as stamps and online postage are the same. You will need to set up a Smartstamp account online as this cant be used via your account- the monthly subscription is £5.99 for this but I believe that this is payment via card as you go.
I think these PO prices above may relate to those after the increase for personal customers after April 30th, until then its a bit cheaper
(and tracked price above had to be locked in before price rises in April 2012)

Another slightly cheaper prepay option is to use a mixture of above:

ie. 1st class or 2nd class without RD,

so would work out a bit cheaper than the prices quoted above but would still have compensation cover if i prepay (albeit without tracking or signature).

I heard that Recorded delivery may be implemented back into the Business account compensation scheme – if anyone hears anything about this or wants to add to this thread please let me know

Cheers
