Compiled by the Union’s National Health & Safety Department which details harrowing accounts of injuries and deaths caused by dangerous dogs attacking members of the public and postal and telecoms workers.
Some previous CWU case studies can be perused at - http://www.cwu.org/52211/case-studies.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The document provides facts and photographs of some of the most publicised cases, and is not for the squeamish, given the clarity of the photographs in illustrating just what dog bites can do by way of injuries, not to mention cause the death of both adults and children.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Children & People Injured & Killed In Dog Attacks
I have been bitten by dogs twice, one from behind a letter box and the other when I got nipped by a boxer, luckly it was pulled back in time.
Since then I would never enter any premises if there is the slightest suspicion that there is a dog about, I ALWAYS put the letters halfway through a letter box and let the dogs rip it to shreds, if the owner don't care about my fingers, I don't care about their letters
Children will never be anywhere near a dog on their own ever, all dogs turn eventually and they all can bite, I would never visit anyone that has a big dog that is difficult to fight off even if its a close relative, I simply do not trust them, they are animal at the end of the day, any dog that looks like it is going for my children will get beaten/stabbed to death by me regardless of the consequences.
I think bad owners should be put down in my opinion

No deliveries and i would suspend the whole estate if there a careless owner with mad dangerous dogs, the neighbours will sort it.
Until the law is beefed up to include private properties, it will go on, it is long overdue for an overhaul, its the dog lovers lobby (which includes many MPS) who consistently block any progress on this, regardless of the consequences, they will soon change their minds when one of their own is killed by a dog.

Re: Children & People Injured & Killed In Dog Attacks
Its true at least in my experience that any dog can turn. When I was about 14 years our family dog, a beagle cross (soft as anything) bit my brother for apparently no reason. Luckily our dad was there and was able to drag him off before any serious damage beyond puncture wounds and bruising on my brothers arm. As soon as the dog had calmed down, it was taken to the vets and put to sleep.NWpostie wrote:Children will never be anywhere near a dog on their own ever, all dogs turn eventually and they all can bite
Thing was it was very well trained and very obedient and had not caused any problems before in the 8 years we had it, it just turned.

I've never heard such absolute unsubstantiated rubbish!NWpostie wrote:all dogs turn eventually and they all can bite
So are you saying that last years figures of 8.3 million dogs in the UK and 6 thousand dog related hospital admissions, (everyone, not just Royal Mail employees) that all dogs turn eventually.
…and the reasoning is that they are an animal; OMG I better get rid of the guinea pig then because that's an animal too, and oh yes so are humans.

Although "turn" is probably not the right word as a dog gets older it's behaviour changes and becomes more unpredictable.Himaggen wrote:I've never heard such absolute unsubstantiated rubbish!NWpostie wrote:all dogs turn eventually and they all can bite

That's only natural because it happens to all animals including us.
What a dog sees as fun as a daft two year old can be irritating to a twelve year old and what might not seem a threat to a healthy young dog can produce aggressive/defensive behaviour in an old dog.

Re: Children & People Injured & Killed In Dog Attacks
That's an exaggeration too, a dog is a creature of habit, it remembers events/patterns and adjusts its behaviour according to the outcome of them. When a dog begins to age the owner should continue to reaffirm those habits/patterns by ensuring they provide sufficient instruction. Unfortunetely us flawed human animals reduce the amount of instruction/training we give to them as they get older. (Believing that you cannot teach an old dog new tricks does not mean that you shouldn't remind them of the ones they've already learned).fishtank wrote:Although "turn" is probably not the right word as a dog gets older it's behaviour changes and becomes more unpredictable.

No I'll stick with exaggeration, for this reason; you are correct that the dogs behaviour alters as it ages, however due to the owners behaviour also altering conversely the effect is exaggerated.

I don't know where you get your figures from, but saying that for the sake of arguments, out of the 8.3m dogs, taking away the puppies and the old dogs, you will also take away miniature toy dogs, crippled dogs and dogs with disabilities, leaving the bigger breeds, the ones that can bite seriously, 6 thousand injuries a year does seem quite a lot given the numbers left over, of which I would imagine about be 4m, that is those that are injured, it doesn't mention those killed, from nasty nips to serious life changing injuries, I think 6 thousand per year is too many.Himaggen wrote:I've never heard such absolute unsubstantiated rubbish!NWpostie wrote:all dogs turn eventually and they all can bite

In the right set of circumstances dogs can turn and bite, I have met owners of assistance dogs , hearing dogs for the Deaf and blind dogs for blinds people, they are usually selected for good temperaments, docility, intelligence, even they can get growly with younger ignorant puppies and certain individuals that could wind them up, I have seen it happen.
Guinea pigs are not relevant to the subject, while they can nip fingers, it is usually no more serious than that.
As to Humans being animals, oh yes we are ! we haven't changed much since we appeared on the earth, just look at Former Yugoslavia once law and order broke down, it was mass rapes, indiscriminate murder, the worst brutality a human can inflict on another, it was a bloodfest of the worst kind, old scores settled, rapes on neighbours and former work colleagues, on children and babies, amid casual brutality, all of this occurred without the restraint of civilisation, yes we are only three square meals from anarchy and social break down, the August riots quite clearly illustrates that point as to how close we are to total breakdown of society.
Your emotive responses doesn't advance your argument one bit.
