A PEE sample from a suspected drink driver was MICROWAVED at a post office to remove traces of booze, cops believe.
Two posties were arrested and quizzed in the probe.
The bizarre saga unfolded when cops took a urine sample from a man who was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving following a road incident in the west of the country last month.
The wee was sent by registered post to the Medical Bureau of Road Safety in Dublin for analysis. However, suspicions were raised when tests at the laboratory returned a zero alcohol reading.
Gardai suspected the slash had been tampered with and reviewed a number of CCTV tapes at the post office.
Last week, two of the workers — who we can’t identify — were arrested in connection with the incident and later released without charge. However it’s understood a file is being prepared for the DPP. It is alleged that one of the two men attempted to interfere with the pee by zapping it in a microwave.
Such a move would have boiled down the alcohol concentration level and rendered the sample useless for testing.
It is understood this is not an isolated incident as gardai believe investigations in other stations have previously been hampered by illegal tampering with drink-driving samples. Gardai told the Irish Sun last night: “We can confirm there is an investigation into the alleged incident”.
However, they said it would be inappropriate to comment any further or to provide specific details.
A spokesperson for An Post declined to issue a comment on the matter
