Are postman meant to walk over gardens?

Our postman does it almost every day, we have different postmen most weeks. We have lived in this house 5 years and a muddy path as been worn in the grass. My garden is very steep at the front and access to my door is from 3 steps at the side of the grass. Easy safe steps. The slope is slippery and the only flat part of the front garden has a large bush, planted by us to stop the postman walking through. The bush we planted first got walked on and killed as the only way to pass the bush is to tip toe around the front of it, but this makes their feet slip and it rips the grass out. I have bulbs in the grass, corcus, daffodils, snow drops etc, which every year they come up and instantly get trampled and never flower.

We have bought this up minimum of 5 times with our sorting office and it stops for a short time. I was lead to believe all postmen are meant to respect property and use paths not gardens. Recently the postman as begun cutting across my grass again so i emailed the customer service team on the main royal mail website. They replied saying how sorry they were and that my complaints had also been forwarded to the local sorting office. Now today, 1 week after i got a reply from my email, i have just watched a postman wearing a manager coat, walking nicely on all peoples paths. Until he got to my house were he chose to take the muddy route. I confronted him and was met with his back and a grunt. So i mentioned the email and he came back, he said they were "dealing" with it. To which i replied they aren't doing very well if a manager can't even respect my garden. Now i am so angry as he then came back to mention he needed to tell all the postmen i have a dog and mark it on my address. Which i understand fully is for their safety. but i have had my dog 4 years, he is never outside the house as the front in unsecure. my back garden is surrounded by 6ft fencing so they never ever lay eyes on my dog. This has never been bought up before. It felt like a reaction to me catching him out on my garden. I dont mind if they want to make everyone aware i have a dog, my dog is not dangerous and i have no concerns but i don't understand how a postman can remember i have a dog, yet can't rebember not to walk through my bush on my garden. When i said this the manager walked away.

No one has been clear what the policy is on this, if postmen are meant to use paths ONLY. I am tired of complaining and just want to be able to grow my grass, and my little flowers. Any adivce on this or does anyone know what the policy for posties is on this?

No, we're not supposed to walk over gardens. But with duties being too long and people being under pressure they will always try to take shortcuts.

as for stopping them.............short of a 6 foot fence, there is nothing more you can do then what you have already done, keep complaining to the delivery office and they may take the hint and stop it.

I would not normally recommend this but as you have been treated in such a very poor fashion, and if you are certain they were a manager, I would complain to our CEO Moya Greene. Managers are paid more and have more responsibility because of that, they certainly should be following all the rules and certainly should be dealing with the public in a more professional manner than this manager has.

Personal Attention of
Moya Greene
Royal Mail CEO
148 Old Street,
London, EC1V 9HQ

She may not see it but certainly her inner office staff should, and they should also deal with it sympathetically.

Yes, agreed you've done all the right things. Unfortunately all you can do is keep complaining. I would like to know what you mean by management coat though?

hi, thanks for your replies. yes he was wearing an orande high vis waitcoat which was blue at the top saying manager. I asked his name and where he was a manager and he confirmed he was a manager at my sorting office.

i am actually considering moving the bush and putting a small section of fence up instead, but its a shame i have to.

If they're stepping over your bush then they'll step over a small fence

i will make is about 4 foot high. my garden is flat along my path for about 2 feet or maybe less and then drops at 45degrees to the main pavement. if i just fence the top flat bit they might be less likely to try walking around it as they will most likely slip down the bank.

Just make sure there are spikes on the top of it because 4 foot is just at the throwing the leg over height

Probably not just the postman. If its anything like where I live you'll have numerous leaflet distributors now and a variety of other rubbish dumped through the letterbox aswell as any free papers. They will all take the short cuts aswell. Plant a nice Holly Bush in the way that will stop any culprits.
