Conduct code for not having post-it pegs but...

Post by Hitcher »

no mention of not using trolleys.

That was last weeks WTL because the office is getting a visit from H&S this week.

Unbelievable!

Could you tell me, as a result of your WTLL session:
  1. What is the post-it pegs function?
  2. On what basis could you be conduct coded for not having one?
These are serious questions for discussion not naivety due to not knowing what they are.

They are a red plastic device with a slot in the end to enable you to put a letter (note that they have a very limited capacity) through a customers letter box where there is a danger of dog biting or snatching at the mail.

I have always stuck to the rules that used to be evident on a sheet affixed to the frames (but which now seem to have strangely dissappeared), that you should place NO part of your fingers or hand into a letterbox, and that our responsibility for posting ended once the mail was IN the box but not neccessarily through it.
Given the draught excluders, additional flaps and other baffles fitted nowadays this is not always easy to do but I am now concerned that we will be expected to use the "pokey stick" to ensure throughput of mail on all deliveries, thus adding an hour to each duty lol.

These devices will at best hold one or two folded letters without breaking and certainly have no hope of assisting in the delivery of anything more substantial such as a magazine or travel brochure.

More blue sky thinking from our graduate pool !

I used mine today for the first and probably only time - it took some time to position one large flat and one POP3 in it's jaws and the mail was in the dogs before the device got anywhere near the letter flap - I can do the same thing with a careful approach but many times quicker.

The current approach to accidents and incidents, in that Royal Mail will always start their investigation with the view that the unfortunate postie involved is totally responsible for their plight and should be accordingly conduct coded for it is disgraceful, and this new tool is aimed at moving more responsibility to us and taking it away from our employer and the customers - this is one "cleft stick" we should not be caught in - the tool is virtually useless but the price of them will no doubt be astronomical :)

No one has ever been given post-it pegs in my office despite seeing a big stack of them sitting on one of the managers desk months ago. At the time we were meant to ask for one I think as they 'cost' so he would'nt hand them out. Don't matter now anyway as they've all disappeared never to be seen again no doubt. If I know there is a dog/cat behind the door that snatches I'll use my pen :cuppa
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

It is easier to use the "blunt" end of the peg to push whatever through.
Keeps your fingers away from the dog/cat.

I have heard it mentioned that any failure of mail following a postperson not being able to complete their delivery after getting their fingers bitten (due to their own stupidity) would be treated as wilful delay.

We all got one last year.
Mine lasted one day, the bull mastif ripped it from my hand, almost pulling me through the door with it!
I never got it back so i carry on like before, just avoid putting fingers through any letter box.

Its purpose is for insertion of mail into letterboxes where doing so without could mean your finger(s) entering the opening. (thus exposing you to an unknown risk).

It is not a 'Dog Peg' and its purpose has nothing whatsoever to do with dogs!
If you know there is a dog on the other side of the delivery point, then you endorse the mail and return it informing a Manager. (The intended recipient will be informed that they need to remove the known risk in order to continue to receive mail at that delivery point.)

<edit />
You cannot be conduct coded for not carrying a post-it peg, you may however be conduct coded if an incident occurs as a result of not using one and an investigation decides you should have.

I'm only repeating what we were told in last weeks WTL.

What gets me though is the fact that there's absolutely no mention of not using trolleys being a H&S risk/conduct code problem now that we've had our revision.

Funny :chuckle :chuckle I just don't post mail through if the dog is there and ready to snatch because I would end up on the conduct code for losing the pegs :whistle

This really is serious nobody should be using these pegs for known dogs; the picture posted fishtank above is wrong for that reason and two others.
  1. The letterbox does not pose a risk, you can clearly see that insertion of mail can be achieved with no risk of fingers entering.
  2. The internal flap is additional protection.
Additionally you should have been told that if something grabs the peg you must let go, leave without it and inform your Manager upon return to the Office.

<edit />@Hitcher
Have you not got a Safety Rep?
If you have tell them to inform the Manager not to use threats of conduct against their Members under the banner of Health and Safety without going through them first.
